Description Length = 500m,

Width = 178.78m,

Height = 55.05m

Commissioned in 2412, the Lakota class starship was designed to act as a heavy destroyer. Smaller than the Sovereign class, but able to pack just as big a punch, the Lakota is cheaper to produce in large numbers and comes equipped with Type XIV phasers, regenerative shielding, ablative armor (over key areas) and quantum torpedoes . After it's testing phase with the Aventine class, the Quantum Slipstream Drive has now been perfected and is installed on the Lakota as standard. This multi-role ship can also act as a long range explorer and is equipped with a modular sensor package (4 of each are located on the lateral edge of the saucer section) that can easily be pulled out and swapped over for specific missions, or simply to receive further upgrades with ease.  There are plans to be able to insert, not only sensor packages but also portable weapons platforms into these modules. Two current variants of these platforms would be retractable micro torpedo launchers and rotational pulse phaser cannons, both of which are still in the testing phase. The first ship-of-the-class is named after the U.S.S. Lakota, which gained notoriety after being one of the few Federation ships ever to fire upon another. *That ship later went on to survive the Dominion War and was later destroyed after serving with distinction during the Iconian War. Whilst the Lakota's design still holds true to Starfleet's aim of peaceful exploration, it reflects the more contemporary attitude that deep space exploration vehicles need to be better able to defend themselves against ever more advanced and aggressive species.

Design notes:

This design is heavily based upon a concept sketch from the great John Eaves, which would later be coined as the 'Eaves class starship'. Using this as a basic template, I added similar modifications that Eaves added to the Excelsior class to turn it into the Enterprise-B (the flared secondary hull, modular impulse engines and warp fins). The elements have been updated to make the vessel look more contemporary. As the ship is equipped with a Quantum Slipstream Drive, I have added Slipstream sensors, much like those of the USS Dauntless, (NX-01-A) which are the small glowing protrusions on the aft of the secondary hull. I named the ship after the infamous USS Lakota, which featured in DS9's fourth season episode, 'Paradise Lost'.

*Not strictly canon information, but made up to suit the background info for the design.

 You know, you didn't have to destroy the Lakota. She could've been retired by now. Then again, Starfleet probably needed as many ships as they could employ...

Indeed, as I mentioned in the description, it's not strictly canon. I thought that because of the Lakota's battle with the USS Defiant in DS9's Paradise Lost, that the name would carry a certain amount of stigma/disgrace with it - hence they would never name a class of ship after her. No, the ship would need to redeem itself somehow, meriting the honour of having a whole new class of starship being named after it. Nothing would be more worthy of such an honour than the ship sacrificing itself in battle, hence why I chose to have her destroyed in the backstory.

That makes quite a bit of sense, and I agree. It seems fitting for the Lakota to redeem her name in fire.

Cool, I'm glad it makes sense to you.
