Description

Some might say that this is a good thing, but we've never seen a carrier class starship in Star Trek. The 'Invasion' game that came out in the late 90's on the Playstation console had a tiny carrier called the 'USS Typhon' commanded by Worf. The USS Valkyrie (or 'The Brick' as she's affectionately called) is my slight re-design of that carrier, but significantly scaled up to approx 2400m long and given an extra set of warp nacelles. The reason for the upscale is that I wanted her to be able to carry 2x Defiant class ships as escorts, which would be able to dock in her rear hangar bays. Here she is compared to some other ships in Star Trek.

I know this is an older work, but part of the problem visually when comparing this thing to ships like the Galaxy class and the like is that it doesn't *look* like it should be bigger by such a large degree.Β  Here's one of the main reasons why: the windows.Β  When comparing the windows of your carrier to the other ships it just looks like its not supposed to be bigger.Β  Now, I suppose it could be claimed that the windows are the size of small medium sized buildings, but that just kinda stretches suspension of disbelief far too much.Β  I mean, who would want a window that big on anything, much less a giant vessel traveling through the void of space?Β  Plus, the visual part of the brain just doesn't want to accept such an answer.Β  If you ever make more images of this ship, that's something I recommend changing.Β  Make the windows barely the size of a pixel, and only when zoomed to full size.

Now, I've got to ask, why?Β  Why make a Starfleet ship this big?Β  What's the purpose of this vessel?

All you'd need is two extendable docking pods and it'd look like a Battlestar

Just to add this!

The Smallest Voidships in the Imperial Navy are over 1 kmΒ long.Β

and most of the Standard Ships of the Fleet are aroung 5Β kmΒ long.Β

Lets just say Warhammer 40k size ships are bigger than star wars.

What a magnificent addition to Starfleet! The bridge design is impeccably canonical while also exceptionally original! I adore the comic book panel image! Well done all around! By the way, exactly how many craft does this thing carry, anyway?

This genuinely seems rather ludicrous for Star Trek and specifically the Federation.

I can understand scaling the thing up, but this looks more like a space station than a starship.

Why is it ludicrous??

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SlingBlade87 In reply to Scifi-Shipyards [2017-11-03 04:06:35 +0000 UTC]

The sheer size of it.

It's the size of some space stations and seems more of a size that we see in Star Wars.

The idea behind it is rather cool though.

Well, the 2009 Enterprise is bigger than the Constitution class at 725 meters, and the Vengeance is over 1400 metersl long.

fair point, but this ship isn't meant to be in that Trek-verse unless I missed a disclaimer.

To me it looks very much like a Starbase wherever Starfleet command needs one in a hurry, which could be extremely useful not just for military purposes, it could be well suited to deploying aid and evacuating civilians in massive numbersΒ

Ho boy! Β While I agree with The Centipede that a forward mobile base like 'The Brick' (Love the nickname!) would be considered aggressive by other star-nations, in the politically unstable times of STO (And my own web-comic...) the Valkyrie would be held in reserve, until matters had come to the point when the Federation -must- "show it's fist". Β The Valkyrie would require a considerable escort screen, may I recommend theΒ "Tiburon-Class"? Β www.deviantart.com/art/The-Sha…
