What comes to mind when you hear Cosmic Corsair?
I think of an intergalactic pirate with some sort of space mask, like this design right here, so he's a mysterious person, and so he could hid his face from the authorities.

What do you focus on first when creating an original character?
The details, and what he looks like when I envision him in my head.

What do you feel is your greatest strength when designing characters?
Unique designs.

This is for the #cosmiccorsair contest for Deviantart, and one that is right up my ally! (May or may not win a Wacom...)
Here's the backstory to boot!

There is a whisper in the air of a pirate that has been made infamous for doing what no pirate has ever done before: attack, and committed theft of property belonging to the corrupted martian federation, the ultimate powerhouse in the solar system, even ruling the Earth itself. An act that caused shocked surprise, excitement, and trepidation among the pirate underworld itself, as that was considered impossible, because normally space pirates usually target and rob aristocrats that are in charge of space colonies and it's populace there. This started a revolution of pirates and smugglers as they become more daring against the federation, who has risen their anti-pirate agenda to a new upward high. The man that started this new wave of piracy, and now considered a leader of this, despite now finding himself with new rivals in the business of smuggling is what history will refer to as Jason Crescent or better known as...THE COSMIC CORSAIR!

Not much is said about Jason or his background...Some say he used to be a member of a aristocrat family until they lost their wealth, stripped of it's position and identity and removed by the federation, and his 'nova star' is a family crest, to honor his family, and to get back at the federation, whilst others claim that the crest is in fact from a long line of space pirates that started seven hundred years ago when the majority of humanity left Earth to live in the colonies due to over population, and space piracy was in it's infancy or perhaps was active but wasn't a thing until now. Some even claimed that he stole it from another family and made it his own crest, in case he wants to sire children to carry on his legacy. Some suggest 'Jason Crescent' is a name he made up, or stole from a man he killed...

Not much is known about his face under the mask either, and very few has ever seen under there. While it is very likely it is to his his face from the Martian Federation, some suggest that he has a scar from a fight, others say that he might be an aristocrat that has decided to become a pirate to upset the establishment or rebel against his parents. One man even claims that he was born with a third eye, and that it's to prevent himself from being discriminated, as he may have been left to die because of the eye.

Regardless, Jason has become both a respected person, yet a feared and dangerous person. Both to the Federation, the Aristocrats and even fellow space pirates who want to either kill him, or knock him off his perch as 'Lord of the Pirates'. He's never without his 'boosters', which he flies, even in combat, nor his 'beam rapier', a weapon he claims to be his own design, and he killed many a opponent with it.

With his crimes of theft of Federation property, not to mention counts of murders and piracy in the solar system, he has become the most wanted man with a high reward of $£900,000,000.
And now, Jason Crescent, The Cosmic Corsair, will now strike against the martian federation and other pirates with his band of fellow pirates, dissidents, criminals, anarchists, smugglers and thieves at his command...
