Description

Voices filled the Haddock home as guests filed into the large living room, drinks in hand, to circle the television. The channel was already set to a live report of New York City. Laughter intermingled with drunk chatter made louder thanks to Tuffnut hooting and hollering for the ball to drop. Astrid slinked past him, her parrot Stormfly grabbing their friend's beer.

Tuffnut wobbled to and fro with a stupid grin on his face. He flopped against Snotlout who shoved him backwards into his sister Ruffnut's arms. Her twin squinted at her then giggled.

“Heeeeey~ R. Did...did we always h-h-have two sisters?” Tuffnut slurred.

Ruffnut pulled her arms back, letting her brother drop to the floor. Rolling her eyes, Ruffnut stepped over him walking through the crowd. She pushed her way past until she reached the host Stoick who was making idle chit chat. She reached up awkwardly, tapping his shoulder.

Stoick half turned, mouth already open and annoyance flashing across his face. Upon seeing her, his rosy cheeks  pinched.

“Oh Ruffnut, it's you. Thought that was your brother- why is he on the floor?” Stoick asked, gawking at the blond on the floor with Fishlegs hovering over him while his bulldog Meatlug chewed on his dreads.

Ruffnut shrugged while casting him an innocent look.

“He fell?”

Stoick pinched the bridge of his nose as Ruffnut teetered back and forth on her heels, hands clasped behind her. Leaning to look behind him, Ruffnut glanced up at him and asked, “Soooo, uh, where's Hiccup?”

At the mention of his son's nickname, Stoick's annoyance melted away like snow. In its place a flash of concern; Stoick peered over his shoulder towards the stairs. His mouth formed a thin line which made Ruffnut suddenly stand straight.

“Is he...not here?” Ruffnut asked in a surprisingly soft voice.

Stoick shot her a strange look. She mentally slapped herself, clearing her throat Ruffnut waved her hand dismissively. The wheels in her brain started to spin like mad. It hit her then.

“Pfft, that's a dumb question! Course he's here. All the comic book stores are closed right now, so he's got nowhere to be except home? Eh?” Ruffnut blurted out, tugging her braid and her eyes darting around. She shot the host a sheepish look.

Stoick opened his mouth when a metal hand rested upon his shoulder.

“Aye, the lad's here! Up in his room to be precise. Though don't expect him to be wantin' any company, Ruff.” Gobber said as he snatched Stoick's wine glass away, taking a swig before waving his glass around. Stoick's left eye twitched with the glass' contents sloshing around the top. A few droplets splashed against Gobber's shirt. Stoick spun away from Ruffnut then.

“Gobber, I swear if you get red wine on that new rug you'll be losing your other hand. Now give it back!” Stoick snapped while grabbing his drink.

Ruffnut snorted a little seeing two grown men argue like toddlers over wine. She looked past them towards the stairs. The guests were focused on Gobber and Stoick now. Even their friends. While all eyes were on the two older men, Ruffnut slipped away. She poked her head out into the hallway, and seeing the coast was clear she bolted towards the stairs skipping every step. Even in the dim light she found her way to Hiccup's room.

The door was cracked open.

She pushed it open, just enough for her to shimmy inside then went to shut the door. A soft whine ghosted against her back followed by a groan.

“Daaaad. Leave it ajar for Tooth.” Hiccup's raspy voice echoed through the room.

“Dude, you sound like death,” Ruffnut said leaving the door cracked, she walked over to his bed. Hiccup murmured her name in surprise. She sat on the edge, and nearly jumped out of her skin at a yelp. Even in the dark, she could feel Toothless scowl at her. The lab huffed then hopped off the bed to lay in his own doggy bed. Ruffnut rolled her eyes, murmuring a curt apology. She turned her attention back onto Hiccup who pulled the covers over his head. She leaned closer to see better then sighed. Ruffnut curled her fingers around the curtain.

“Ruff, don't.”

She arched her brow.

“Uh why?”

“The light hurts my eyes...” Hiccup said weakly.

Her hand fell from the curtain.

Ruffnut crawled behind Hiccup, pulling the comforter up and over herself. Hiccup remained quiet until her arms wrapped around his waist, her thumb drawing circles over his hip bone. His hands rested against hers then pulled them apart. Ruffnut's mouth opened then slammed shut as Hiccup rolled around and buried his face into her neck. His messy air tickled her nose, his breath against her skin sent chills down her spine. It was his turn to wrap his arms around her waist, pulling her close. Ruffnut smiled, cradling him in her arms.

She ran her fingers through his hair, and whispered, “Migraine on New Year's Eve? You have the worst luck, Hic.”

He snorted, Hiccup peppered kisses against her collarbone.

“Hey, get to start the year with you in my arms. So not the worst luck, I say.”

“Mhm~.” Ruffnut murmured then yelped at something cold pressed against her feet.

She half shoved him back, her eyes finally adjusting the light to see that stupid devious grin etched across his face. Her eyes grew wide at toes drumming against her foot. She barked out a laugh while he stuck his tongue out at her.

“Seriously, Hiccup? What are you five?”

“Well I'm dating you, aren't I”

“Are you saying I'm a bad influence?”

“Maybe~”

She playfully tugged at his hair earning her a sweet honey laugh. The room suddenly shook as a huge uproar bellowed from below. Hiccup once more buried his face into her neck with a groan, hugging her tight.

“They'll notice you're gone, Ruff.” Hiccup murmured.

She shrugged.

“Eh, I doubt it. Your dad and the others were pretty drunk by the time I left. Not like anyone would notice...” She muttered.

Hiccup lifted his head.

“I would.”

Smiling, Ruffnut pressed a quick kiss to his nose then pressed his face into her neck again. She chewed her inner cheek for a moment.

“Will it be bad, if we just missed the countdown?” She asked aloud.

Her boyfriend shrugged.

“We have next  year to join, right?”

He grinned hearing his girlfriend chortling.
