From childhood when he met that red-haired lily who shone through his life; even after she's gone, she continued to be his belief which expressed through his patronus. The position of the memory and the patronus show that Lily is Snape's light in the past, the present and the future. The pain in the past became the shadow yet also a part of Snape, that's why the shadows are also colored in black. Despite Death (Nagini) hovering her fangs around his neck, he faithfully protected that child against destiny and schemes, using his tender darkness. Even with the Dark Mark on his arm, his wand always pointed at his true enemy without the Dark Lord's awareness (Voldemort's wand is pointing at Dumbledore). Finally, all tragedies happened under one prophecy, the cause of everything.
