I remember hearing somewhere that high heels are descended from shoes men would wear to ride horses, with the heel originally designed to help grip the stirrups. How they went from that to women's formal fashion, I have no idea.

i have a feeling the old mens riding boots where no where near as exaggerated as these though XD
