Description
This is my Great Grampa's shop that he built with family.
Fremont, like other Wayne County towns, has never had a population large enough to provide many business opportunities. In the early years several individuals established small stores, including A.J. Allred, who opened the first one. In the 1890s Joseph Anderson built a two-story rock building for his mercantile business. When it failed, school district trustees acquired the building for school use. The most successful merchant was probably J. Worthen Jackson. The building that housed Worthen's Merc is one of the most distinctive structures remaining in Wayne County. The exterior of the store is said to incorporate some "10,000 stones from different parts of the country."
