In a big enough city, models get paid rather well actually. The Toronto School of Art is just one of about a dozen places around the city where I can draw models at night or on the weekends. One year wayback I took 8 months off and did nothing but life drawing, for up to 12 hours a week, along with doing my own stuff on the side. A few months of doing that much life drawing really gave me an edge.
Toronto is one of my least favorite places to be (specially in winter) but its a ripe environment for artists, to its credit.
