I can't say how long it would last if you did it cuz it really depends on the type of hair.
In the beginning, when I dyed my hair rainbow for the first time (back in september 2011)it didn't last very long (like.. four showers and it had to be dyed again!) and the colors faded terribly.
It took about three months for the colors to start looking right.
From my experiences, it lasts better the longer you have the same color (but again, it still depends on how your hair reacts to dye in general..) Now, after more than a year of keeping the same colors at the same places, my rainbow hair lasts pretty long (I usually re-dye my hair and bleach my roots about once a month but sometimes I wait longer) - and it fades really really nice! The color is at it's best the first three weeks in my opinion.

I don't use anything to prevent color fade.(also, I usually use environmentally friendly products) I just make sure not to shower in boiling hot water, and I use a very small amount of shampoo and conditioner (AND I rinse it out as fast as possible!)
