Description Liar's Kiss
Story- Eric Skillman
Pencil and Inks- Me

I threw in some dialogue so you guys would understand what's going on, though there's some error regarding the "N" letter being mirrored because I used a Mac font on a pc and have no idea of working around that problem.

Anyway, it's always been a dilemma that I'm always pulled in different directions by my art heroes and always look unto my own work as crap or very much inferior to the original source. It's like, I love how insanely detailed and finely rendered Charest's work is and how dynamic and gritty Leinil does his own thing or even how loose and funky Cheeks apply his own magic.

Sometimes I find myself going crazy over what inspiration will I allow myself to get myself strongly over to ultimately define a personal style, considering they are of very different discipline and the result of that I guess is my schizophrenic gallery.

When I was handed this script for Liar's Kiss, knowing the story was noir and with my Risso-influence in check, my approach instinctively became to do it as how the man himself would.

It's a neat trick I guess, to be able to scratch beneath the surface of someone else's genius but do I suffer the lack of artistic identity along the process?

Decisions, decisions...

Problema ko nga, yung "your own" ang di ko alam. Kasi parang puro borrowed skills lahat.

Naiisip ko nga baka naoo-over analyze ko lang lahat at normal lang sa artist yung pinagdadaanan ko, pero di ko rin naman malalaman kung di ko itatanong... hirap!

halos lahat ng artists pinagdaanan yan and i think if you compare your works from your inspirations, there's something there that's truly yours. kahit na maliit lang. kailangan lang madevelop.

punas pawis! 8D

dear... i can definitely understand that...
i think that the only way to go is to develop something of your own, and not get carried away with influences. you cannot do everything you love about other people's works, no matter what - the influences are usually opposing each other, and even if they were not - the guy one who developed it will do it better.

i think you are talented as all hell, and maybe what you could try is to give yourself time with no outside influences at all, just looking at what you find interesting, what kind of things pull you, and let yourself develop your own thing.

it's a slow process, and if i knew how to do it easily - i would have already, but i think it's worth it....

whatever you do though - your works are not crap... have faith in yourself! - i know i do have faith in you!

Thanks, I really appreciate you taking the time to shower some compassion in my direction.

I've been meaning to write it before, hoping someone might have some input that I can't find myself but, the fear of being thought as "emo" which the world labels anyone who showed some "humanity" nowadays somehow holds me back. And then, after further reading your lovely comment I realized I've already asked this very question one and half years ago to Travis Charest himself and both of you almost exactly said the same thing and it instantly made me feel real rottenly embarassed because I thought, where was my mind focused on to have forgotten an answer already provided to me and at the same very grateful to you for reminding me of that.

Now, I guess I'm off to find a work system and make all these excellent theories to work.

BEST!

it's more like fandom, lol, but always

don't be held back.... asking folks for help is not emo by any means, quite the opposite. it shows courage, and willingness to learn (and to admit mistakes).

don't be embarrassed dear, it happens. don't worry about it.

the best of luck dear!
