The whole point of the new portal tech she was developing was to fix the unreliability of where the previous model took you, but as she stepped through into a strange white room is seemed like she still had some bugs to iron out. Speaking of bugs, another issue with her device that she hadn't noticed yet is that when the destination portal opened up it would occasionally alter the size of any matter around it. In this case making Chell so small that the barefoot giantess wouldn't even feel her flatten underfoot...
