Victorian is far too fancy for me as well; I like log cabin style. Woodsy and warm.

Thanks! I don't make them too elaborate most of the time, because they can take so long. But it helps set the scene for the rest of the characters.

Yeah I get you, sometimes is better to keep things a bit simple . But yours are still pretty awesome and I think you put very good details to them, like that lamp post for example, that's a very nice design you did there

Good thing I kept the lamp  post design then. I had considered simplifying it to keep the neighborhood from looking to upper class, but I decided to keep the extra fancy stuff for fun.

The porch was originally more elaborate. There was a circular archway with wings that resembled the lamp post, however, my program crashed and didn't save the pen tool paths I had been working with. I did keep the handrails and stairs though.

Ohh that's too bad   I hate it when art programs crash while you're still working on something, It's so frustrating   But I'm glad that you could manage to keep some stuff the same, I honestly don't know anything about backgrounds so I don't really know  they way they should work, but in my opinion you Nailed it

The problem was that I was using a tool that isn't really the best and if you wanted to save the path progress, unfortunately some extra steps have to be taken.

I don't know all that much either, but I do know that backgrounds mostly act as a setting and provide a mood for the characters.

 wow that sounds like a big challenge, especially when drawing indoor backgrounds for a character's house (because it should reflect their personality, right?) But I guess that as time goes by you can get used to all those extra steps and they become less tedious to apply

In a way yes. The more you practice something the better at it you get. When it comes to character design, it's the same thing, however you really can't progress without looking at the real thing. For designing the house I had to look at many different Victorian homes to figure out what pieces I liked and get a shape that would identify as Victorian rather than a modern home.

Designing the inside of her living space is going to be a new kind of challenge for me. Like you mentioned, a living space shows a bit of a character's personality and that's something I've rarely touched base with. I have a bunch of layout material figured in the floor plan, but her decorations and other details have not been touched yet. Since she is Japanese, I was going to add some of those elements into the interior design, however they are going to look weird within a Victorian space. One of my options is to do a unique crossover between European and Japanese furniture design, like how Disney portrayed San Fransokyo in their recent movie, Big Hero 6, or I could use a little of both cultural elements. There is also a bit of a modern touch on the house as well because I worried that a true Victorian style would cost too much money for her to live in. Then, there is me playing around with Antonio Gaudi's art nouveau architectural style and that is a little extra fancy something that I would need to add to all the buildings to make them "normal".

Well, I think that mixing victorian style with japanese decorations could work out depending on the type of ornamentation you decide to add to it, like a porcelain  vase or some simple candle lights, maybe?, But also consider the fact that Vivi works at a book store so the place is probably full of bookshelves   (idk, that's just my opinion  )

That was another thing, does Vivi identify with her ethnic background or does she completely absorb herself in comic books, mystery novels and the paranormal? Depending on how her parents are, she could be the black sheep of the family, and may have a broad collection of stuff from her parents/ things she'd rather identify with.

It looks like I'm just going to have to sit down and pick whatever I think sounds cool. XD
