In Italy there are the same spiders (also named Argiope) and I always thought that they're a pretty big spiders, but the italian ones are very much smaller than this one D: (still an adorable spider though!)

Had one of these gals in my backyard awhile ago. I named her Judy but after moving her web around a few times she disappeared.

THe only thing that terrifies me when I see a spider are their gigantic butts. If I knew if a species was venomous or not, I wouldn't have had any problem.

And I'm sure you've seen the delightful Lubber Grasshopper Romalea guttata, which looks like a plastic toy. Actually, do they have those in Maryland as well? I'm originally from Michigan and Connecticut, so I've obviously never seen them that far north, but I'm not sure if they live in the milder temperate states.

Nope, never saw huge lubbers until Florida, and have only seen a couple of them so far!

Try going to a pine scrubland during late spring/early summer. Lubbers are freaking everywhere!

Our Florida spiders may be tiny, but there are some gorgeous specimens here. Like the spiny orb-weaver Gasteracantha cancriformis, the golden silk spider Nephila clavipes and the various types of emerald-colored lynx spiders.

I love the little spiny Jewel spiders, and I've seen one or two Clavipes as well as an emerald lynx!

south carolina has many large argiopes and the woods have many large orange orb weavers. i haven't seen like any arthropods since i moved to nevada. though we do have small annual cicadas.

All spiders have venom (injected poison) but none are poisonous to eat or anything, and most spider venom is harmless to humans

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

scythemantis In reply to absent-reality [2010-08-24 03:38:54 +0000 UTC]

I thought I said "most"

Black Widows are really among only a tiny little handful of dangerous spider types, with thousands more species causing no significant harm at all. And even the "deadly" ones are greatly exaggerated; a black widow bite will make you feel awful, like you've been hit with the flu for a day or two, but only kills people 1% of the time, usually because they're very young or very old or have a preexisting illness. This still makes it the world's second deadliest spider; there just aren't that many human deaths by spiders at all

absent-reality In reply to scythemantis [2010-08-24 04:03:38 +0000 UTC]

Well I suppose you did

Very cool, I definitely didn't know that. Thought they're were some very deadly spiders out there. Which is the most deadly?

PS I looove your comic

scythemantis In reply to absent-reality [2010-08-24 04:42:14 +0000 UTC]

Hee, thanks!

The deadliest is the Sydney Funnelweb, which DOES have a pretty high mortality rate, it's a huge tarantula-like beast, and it's one of the few spiders known to go out of its way to chase down and bite humans or other large animals, an angry angry territorial spider!

looking it up, though, it seems only children died from it mostly and no deaths have been reported since an antivenin was developed in 1981, sooo...I guess there are no spiders to fear TOO much!

absent-reality In reply to scythemantis [2010-08-25 07:44:28 +0000 UTC]

Speaking of which. That reminds me of a page on ED I saw.

BOX JELLYFISH
Oh shit, the box jelly fish here to kick ass and takes names. Jesus fucking shit christ this is the most venomous animal alive, godamn! This fucker is so badass he doesnt even need to do shit to kill your sorry ass, it hangs out in the waters and waits for things to bump into it and die. It kills you faster and lulzyier than the venom of snakes, (rape)spiders, insects, and jews combined. The sting of a box jellyfish can kill over 9000 adults in under 3 mins you stupid cunt. Once you are stung, your heart, nervous system, and skin are all ultra-raped at the same time. Bitches don't know that most of them will die of heart failure before they fucking reaching the shore. There are over 19 different types of box jelly fish, including loli-sized who are just as venomous as their basketball sized cousins. You think it was just by accident that your faggot ass bumped into this jelly beast? Hell no, the box jellyfish is the only motherfucking jellyfish with eyes, so it watched your dumb ass try to play with its tentacles of death. It watched you while you killed yourself on its penis like a true gangsta. How bad ass is that.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

scythemantis In reply to absent-reality [2010-08-27 07:19:02 +0000 UTC]

Tiny, tiny pinhead-size eyes in clusters at each corner of their bell! Despite having no brain, a network throughout the body acts like a visual cortex and they can form an image almost as good as a vertebrate; except it's blurry because of the eye number and placement

Reminds me of Wasps and Hornets because of its coloring. She is a big and beautiful lady though, ain't she? We have cat spiders here, or rather that is the name I like to refer to them as and they are the only other species I know of that can get to a large size. The "Cat Spiders" resemle crabs more though. Some of them even have designs that look like Kabuki faces! Just beautiful.

Actually, we do have these here. We also have a spider that I can't identify. But here's the kicker: it's a eusocial species. That's almost nonexistant in the arachnid kingdom!
