Description ~MiniMM said to post something poot-tastic, and this is Mumulamula the chicken (who goes poot-poot...on ~MiniMM , and only ~MiniMM ) after a haircut! The lovely chicken had an "afro" that was covering her eyes and she couldn't see where she was going, so we gave her a trim! Behold! She can see now!

Thank you! I'm glad her haircut ended up well! XD She looks cuter with a full "afro" but poor girl can't see anything then haha!

Aww, haha. She looks amazing!
Is she a specific breed or just an adorable mix?

Thank you! She couldn't see anything and kept ramming into walls and flying for no reason, so we have to give her a haircut every now and then. She's very good and just relaxes as we trim away! Β

She's a mix between a silkie and a salmon faverolle, although she was sold to us as a white silkie when we got her from the feed store. At first I wasn't too happy that I had a mix (I was hoping that one day I could enter my chickens in one of those breed competitions, but mixes of course are out of the question), but then I changed my mind and she's my second favorite I have. There's no one else like her, both in personality and looks! I've even daydreamed about one day having a flock of silkie x faverolle mixes, minus that's a lot of chicken haircuts needed! XD

Ouch, sounds like she had quite a rough time there! Glad she's so calm you could trim her though, some chickes are really flighty!

That's a pretty cool mix! But do you think the shop lied to you or were they just as unaware as you?
Haha, a flock of that would be awesome, as long as their crests don't get in their face! What's her personality like, she seems very calm?

ScythicKitty In reply to herofan135 [2014-11-02 08:02:57 +0000 UTC]

I'm really not sure if the shop deliberately lied to me or were unaware... the prices for their chicks are triple everyone else's (and five times the cheapest one), but they were also the only ones who still had white silkies in stock (which turned out to be neither white nor silkies!). They had a lot of chicks, and I'd imagine it's because they were so expensive. More than half were quite a bit larger than my fist too, so they were there for awhile and people generally want to buy cute little ones for their kids instead of these teenage ones. They reassured me they were white silkies, but I'm pretty sure they knew that their batch had a lot of mixes inside and they should have said so. I later learned that they mostly get their chicks from school projects and home breeders with mixed flocks.Β I love my mix so very much so it's fine, but it's also disappointing too because we wanted a white silkie the most and now we can't have any since our yard has reached its comfortable limit.

Her personality is... well quite frankly she's really dumb and slow (both mentally and physically), although that also makes her super cute haha! Goodness sometimes it's the "dumb" animals that are really the most charming and have the silliest antics! I love watching her! She has the most terrible voice (some of the neighbor's kids thought she was farting when she clucked!) too, so we sometimes call her Boot Boot (her name is Mumulamula). It takes her forever to jump down one step, she takes her sweet time when we tell them to get in the coop (everyone else is already walking in and she's trailing at the back), sounds the alarm when there's nothing wrong (everyone else is calm), dunks her whole head in the water bowl instead of sipping it elegantly like everyone else, etc... I will say though that she is amazing at playing dead and is a tough cookie! She's been attacked by hawks before but got away, even though they ripped out some feathers! We were so scared when we went into the yard and saw the huge hawk on the fence and a mess of feathers all over. I wouldn't say she's particularly calm since she can be quite a crazy little hen, but she is the calmest when it comes to being held and sleeping on your lap. Β

I'm sorry you didn't get your white silkie, but I do think your lovely mix here makes up for it though. ^^
But it's quite sad that people only wanna buy the small chiks and those that are slithly larger go unnoticed. It's not really good for the company to buy mixed breeds and then try to sell them off as pure breeds, even if the sale rate is low.
I know that quite a few of the poultry sites on the web actually have pictures that show what the chicks of different breeds look like, such as Murray McMurray Hatchery and Efowl. Maybe you could look up the breed you want on those sites before you buy, just to make sure? Though perhaps it's still very difficult to tell a mix from a pure breed at such a tender age.

Haha, they thought she was farting? She seems like such a character with alot of funny antics, it really is those that stand out that are the ones you remember the most, even if you love all your pets.
My budgie once tried to bathe in her seed bowl, it looked so hilarious since she couldn't fit into the bowl, lol!
Sometimes she would climb upside down along the roof of her cage when she wanted to get to the other side, instead of flying there.

The baby silkies did look like silkies for the most part- black skin, white fuzz, feathered feet. They had a tiny hint of brown in one spot though, and at that time I didn't know if that was normal or if they'd just grow out of it. That probably should have been a warning sign. At that point I really wanted a white silkie and there weren't any in any of the other feed stores. We didn't want to wait two weeks for another shipment either, since by then there could be a substantial size different with the older chicks. (Turns out that they all grew really slowly anyways... one of my black silkies was 3 months old and just slightly bigger than my fist.) The lady said indeed those really are silkies and they'll be white, just ignore that brown bit, so I bought them! Β

I love looking through those hatchery sites and magazines! It's like a free little gallery, and I agree that they are great for identifying chicks. My favorite one is probably from Cackle Hatchery, since it is a smaller, but thicker pamphlet so it's easier to hold and read instead of your typical magazine size. Are there any big hatcheries that ship chicks in Sweden? Do you have a favorite breed of chicken?

Your budgie sounds so cute, trying to take a dust bath in her seed bowl! That must have been funny to watch! Did she try that often? My budgies also sometimes climbed upsidedown instead of flying to the other side too. I guess it's good exercise! I had one that actually regularly slept hanging upsidedown instead of sleeping on the perch (the replacement that was the same color as the one that flew away when a family friend was taking care of them). He did that for many years, until the last two years of his life when he got too old. I think he started having arthritis in his feet so he couldn't sleep like that any more. It was funny to see though! It just seemed so inconvenient to sleep like that!Β

Yeah, if you really want something you often become less demanding, especially if only one store has the breed you're after.
But then I understand why it was so difficult to notice that she was a mix, if the only visible sign was a brown spot. Maybe the seller didn't realize they were mixes aswell?
Silkies don't get very large, and they're not bred to grow fast, so you'll have a long time with them as adorable chicks!

Well, I can't look at the magazines here obviously, but I often check out the sites and dream for a little, haha. ^^
There aren't any big hatcheries in Sweden, large companies that produce eggs or meat for consumption hatch their own chicks. There are only local breeders or private persons that sell hatching eggs or chickens from what I know. Animal wellfare laws in Sweden are also very strict, so you're not allowed to ship live animals through the ordinary mail, due to the stress they might experience. Some insects and hatching eggs are an exception though. You must pick them up at the breeder yourself and bring them home with you directly.

Oh man, that is such a hard question, lol! There's so many awesome breeds, I love 'em all! But if I have to pick three favorites it would be sebrights, sultans and Swedish flower hens.
Do you have a favorite or favorites?

She was a real character sometimes, haha!
That particular event only happened once or twice though. But, haha! Reading about your budgie that slept upside down made me laugh so much!
That seems like such an akward position, but I guess he liked it, rofl!

ScythicKitty In reply to herofan135 [2014-12-02 22:21:43 +0000 UTC]

Exactly! At that point we were so "desperate" to finally have our silkies and weren't experienced enough that we were willing to pay the premium price for them. It's possible that the seller didn't realize they were mixes, but since she gets mixes all the time, it doesn't seem right to say that for certain they weren't a mix, especially when I returned a few weeks later with them in the box, and they just shrugged it off and waved me away. (It also doesn't help that they served the person behind me first, which of course makes me wonder if there's some racism going on too. They treated them so nicely and answered all their questions and apologized profusely for even the most minor thing, but when they got to me, it was so different and short, and eye contact was minimal. This experience probably skewed my view of them quite a bit too ).

Wow! The more I hear about Sweden's laws regarding animal welfare, the more I admire it! It really is too bad that more countries don't follow that. That's interesting that animals can't be shipped aside from eggs or some insects, but that makes sense too. I once ordered bettas online, and the next two days it was so hard to sleep! I can't imagine how it was for them in the dark, being jumbled around since being mailed is hardly a gentle process. They came out just fine and I loved them a lot, but I definitely don't think I'd do that again. It's very convenient when you want something specific, but I feel quite bad for the animals! I've heard some horror stories where people order 100 chicks, but somehow they got delayed on a truck in the middle of the desert, and when they arrive, all 100 are dead.

You have great taste in chickens! Those are all gorgeous choices! For me my favorites, if it was only for looks... I also agree sebrights are one of them, specifically the silver laced ones. They are stunning! And like you, I love sultans. I like how they have "everything" on them haha! Then after that is probably a tie between sussex and bearded show-quality silkies. I love the classic chicken look that the sussex has, but it has all those lovely spots on it that reminds me of a frosted flower dessert in chicken form. Similar to a Swedish flower hen in many ways I think. Then the silkies, they are just so fluffy and silly looking! XD But if we take personality and health into account on top of looks (I heard sebrights tend to be aggressive and flighty, but very nice to their owners... not unlike RIRs I guess... and sultans are more fragile in terms of health and need more regular upkeep to look nice. Then my three silkies I've had, well I love them, but they had a more "generic," mellow personality and didn't particularly stand out), I would say seramas and mille fleur d'uccles. Small, sweet, and intelligent! I suppose the egg production for them suffers though...granted, my mille fleur now outlays my RIR.

Haha I'm glad my story of my budgie made you laugh! I agree, it was such a weird and awkward position, yet that's how he would sleep every night without fail until he got old. Even though you've only seen your budgie dust bath once or twice, it must have been fun to see! I saw mine begin to build a nest and sleep in the birdhouse we put in their cage, but sadly before any eggs were laid, that was when the bobcat attacked. It would have been so cool to see them breed and really raise one from a baby!

Yeah, I agree! If you get mixes quite alot you're better off telling your customers that, otherwise your reputation as a seller can go sour very rapidly. They seemed to treat you very nonchalantly though, must have been quite aggrevating! That's really rude to treat you like that, especially since they treated the other customer so well! I totally understand that treatment left a mark, yikes.

Hey thanks alot! We do our best. That incident with the chicks are just the reason this law is there in the first place. It's quite sad when awful things like that happens, even if the transport can go smooth sometimes.

Haha, thanks my friend! I adore the silver laced sebrights aswell, a clear favorite! It's cool that you like sultans aswell, I find them quite fluffy, haha! I've also heard that sultans are quite fragile and has to be contained and in a dry area to avoid damaging their plumage.
Sussex, is quite beautiful aswell, I especially love the white variety! Seramas and millie fleurs are some awesome choices aswell, I bet they make lovely pets. Millie fleur d'uccles is stunningly beautiful, and seramas have a very regal look with their upright pose!

It's kinda cool he managed that, I mean, you'd think he would fall down once he fell asleep, haha.
That would have been amazing, budgies are really one of the easiest birds to breed, even if they still require extra care and attention during their breeding period.
Baby budgies are so tiny and helpless, it's amazing to think that just within a few weeks, that naked, pink baby grows into a beautiful adult bird that can take care of itself. Quite different from us, haha.

Definitely! XD Hopefully other businesses aren't like that. Because California has a lot of minorities, it generally is alright, but once in awhile you run into situations that make you wonder what the issue is. I had an Asian teacher who moved to Georgia to teach, but she quickly returned to California (all other states have far better pay and lower cost of living, like doctors and lawyers make nearly double the amount outside California. It's too competitive here). She said that when students left the classroom, they would spit at here, and there was nothing she could do about it because she was so afraid they would attack her, and the administration would do nothing about it. She is the sweetest lady ever, I can't believe people would do that to her!Β

Verily! I think the upright pose of the seramas is really funny! And I love my mille fleur d'uccle. She also has a beautiful voice (though she can sound awful if she really wants to haha) and sounds a lot like the birds singing outside, instead of your "typical" chicken. In general, it's pretty fun to see how different one chicken sounds from another! I've heard the same about sultans and how they have to be kept dry. They are lovely chickens though! Silver laced sebrights take the cake though in terms of unique feather patterns!

Haha so true! A lot of animals are so amazing soon after they're born, like horses! But for humans? I dare say that barring any disabilities, there are a lot of humans out there who are 30 years old and still as dependent on their parents and hapless as they were when they were 3 years old! XD

herofan135 In reply to ScythicKitty [2014-12-08 18:38:46 +0000 UTC]

Oh man, why would they treat your teacher like that?
If she's as kind as you say, it's really hard to understand. Kids, especially teens can be quite evil sometimes.
Everyone should be treated equally, despite our differences, we're all humans!

Haha, I didn't know they had a different voice than other fowl! It sounds quite pretty but perhaps it gets annoying in the long run.
Yeah, silver sebrights are very beautiful, but I've heard that they have quite a high chick mortality in comparison to other species due to inbreeding. But they're definitely the one breed I would go far, they don't take up much space either.

Haha, that's so true!

I think she actually taught at a community college (2 year colleges that result in a partial degree, usually for transfer to a 4 year university), so these are all people ages 17-26 more or less who were spitting on her! You'd think adults wouldn't act like that. But I guess most of the most atrocious acts are committed by adults, so something "small" like spitting would be well within their capabilities and lack of morals. Obviously not everyone is like that and many cities are wonderful, but in general, the southeast area of the US is still suffering from a lot of racism (white supremacy cities and gangs are still a large threat), sexism, educational, and socioeconomic issues compared to the rest of the country. And some cities have a maternal mortality rate equal to that of third world countries, can you believe that? I am fortunate that I don't live in areas like that, and I do sincerely hope that they'll improve over time in all areas so everyone can be safe and well-rounded. I think if the economy improved there, then so would the education and people would be more open-minded.

Chickens most definitely have all kinds of voices! Like my silkies sound like "oooot ooot ooot" (somewhat owl-like) compared to my RIR's obnoxious squawk. It's been five years and I haven't gotten tired of my mille fleur's cheery bird-like chirps, they're such a joy to listen to! But my RIR's on the other hand...they could really use some singing lessons. XD

Yeah, I heard that sebrights have a high chick mortality rate too. I've only had one but he turned out to be a male, so we couldn't keep him. He was so tiny and seemed so frail compared to other breeds I've had though! He was such a sweetheart and really left a positive impression on me so I hope in the future to keep them again.Β

herofan135 In reply to ScythicKitty [2014-12-10 17:25:23 +0000 UTC]

Woah, that does sound quite strange! I would have expected mortality rates to be like that of third world countries!
I really hope those states will improve and develop with the rest of the US, if you don't have education people become very close-minded, and don't realize that there is so much more to the world.

Haha, that really gave me a chuckle! I've never heard silkies or millie fleurs, and honestly I didn't know that they could sound so different! But my, those RIR's must be quite annoying after a while, or perhaps you've gotten used to it?

I know that aswell, but I do think they would make sweet and gentle pets if you manage to raise them to adulthood. I'm sorry to hear you couldn't keep him, he must have been very handsome!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ScythicKitty In reply to herofan135 [2014-12-13 10:45:02 +0000 UTC]

Definitely! Overall I know the world has gotten more open minded in the past 20 years. Even situations like abortions and divorce are treated so differently already. Hopefully things will change for the better!Β

The RIRs definitely do get annoying, though mostly I'm more worried about what the neighbors think! If the chickens are too disruptive, they could force the city to have us rehome them. Luckily they haven't been too terrible yet, but some days they really seem to just throw a fit! It's not an issue at my mom's house since we can put them in the garage in their beloved plastic tub where they'll be quiet, but when I have them at my sister's house, they're outdoors the whole time and that becomes a problem. I'm glad my description of all the different chicken noises gave you a chuckle though haha!Β One day if you are able to keep chickens, you'll be able to have many breeds and hear all their different voices too! In Sweden, are backyard chickens generally allowed, or do you need a permit or specific yard space to keep them? Is it popular to keep chickens there? In the US, backyard pet chickens have been getting more and more popular. A decade ago, very few people kept them and it was an oddity, but now it seems like everyone knows a friend of a friend who has chickens!Β

He was a handsome lad indeed! And one of the sweetest chicks I've ever had, nothing like the typical descriptions of sebrights. I love how chickens all have their own unique personality!

herofan135 In reply to ScythicKitty [2014-12-16 18:21:37 +0000 UTC]

I hope so too, may all of us continue to move forwards!

Uh oh, if they're that noisy I hope your neighbours won't mind! Would be no fun to have to get ride of them, even if they get on your nerves sometimes! How peculiar that they go quite in the garage, haha!
I read that if you own a house in a suburban area, you're allowed to keep five hens without any kind of permit. If you want more or keep a rooster you have to get a special permit. If you live on the countryside I guess you still have to get the permit, but it's way easier to get it since there's no neighbours that will be disturbed.
I don't think chickens are super popular here though, but a neighbour here has some chickens, ducks and other birds in her backyard. I haven't seen alot of people with chickens in their backyards, but I don't know. ^^

Indeed, everyone is unique!

I haven't owned any chickens since my poor little cochin bantam rooster Horus died. We walked out to his coop one morning and found him dead in the nest box. Our cochin hen Scoots was still sitting beside him... it was so sad! We used to have standard arucanas and a mix of bantam breeds (silkies, millie fleurs, cochins, buff brahmas). We recently got our three lot yard cleared and were thinking about renewing our permit for chickens again. We will probably keep a small flock of three or four for eggs.

I know what you mean! Sadly I have very little self control when it comes to chicks. How do they expect us to pick just a few? Darn chicks and their fluffy cuteness!

ScythicKitty In reply to Nashiil [2013-05-06 04:38:40 +0000 UTC]

Aww, that is so sad! And especially seeing Scoots next to him! Did Horus pass away from old age, or was it a predator attack?

It'll be fun to have chickens again! A pet that gives you breakfast! Do you have to renew the permit every year, and is there a limit to the number of chickens you can keep legally? What else do you plan to do now that the yard has been cleared? Such possibilities!

I was at a swap meet today and they had all these ducklings there... it was just so hard to resist! I wanted to take them all home!! (Luckily... or not luckily... self control won) Baby poultry have such heart-tugging power.

Sorry about the late reply, but I no longer can afford internet.

It was terrible to see them still huddled together in their little nest box. Poor Horus, was getting pretty elderly though (8yrs). We used to joke that Scoots 'hen-pecked' him to death. She was mean little bugger and used to try to spur us. She even crowed along with Horus. If she hadn't have layed eggs we would have thought she was a rooster!

We can keep them if we get a license, which does limit how many we can keep. I still have to call and find out how much it is to renew our license and what the limit is. Once all our financial issues clear up, we will get set up for chickens. I can hardly wait!!!

Thanks! I was glad she turned to look right at the camera then! She tends to look down (might be out of habit because she can't see) and her butt sticking up in the air, so this is a rare posture for her.

Yep! Yesterday I tried tying a rubber band around her "hair" (it's growing quite long again!) but within minutes she flung it off. XD Ahh chicken!

Me too! She's adorable when she has a full head of feathers but it's so sad to see her running straight into the wall.

Thanks! She loves getting her monthly feathercuts and actually holds very still, even closing her eyes as she lays in our lap! Super cute! ^^

Do any of your chickens have a lot of feathers on their head? I remember you had the fighting chickens right? Hooray for chickens! Hm, I don't know about guinea pigs, but you never know till you try! XD
