Jack did just this to use an artifact. To destroy the enemy, he had to open it, BUT it had a curse on it that if opened, it would bring calamity down upon the person's head. So, before he threw it, he took his head OFF and THEN threw it at the villain. Thus the villain was vanquished and the curse avoided , as he didn't have a head THEN for the calamity to land on it!
