Info on the Merpony race:

A long time ago, way back when the sisters first raised the sun and the moon together, was a group of earthponies being lead by 6 powerful unicorns, who decided to live within the Everfree forest. With the help of the unicorns, whom the earth ponies worshiped as prophets, they lived a simple, but peaceful life with the unpredictable forest. The unicorns used their magic to protect their little city, and they prospered and flourished, becoming a city that focused on the arts. Their biggest and most popular arts became singing and pottery making.

But then, one day, the Prophets became too overconfident in their united ability. To produce more crops, they decided to try to control the weather in the everfree forest, so they can decide when the rain falls, and where. The 6 cast a powerful spell into the sky that called in rain clouds. It seemed to have worked...

But then, the rain clouds refused to leave. They continued to pour down water over the city, and began to form a flash flood that no one saw coming. The earth ponies closer to the edges of the city managed to get away. But those gathered in the center, closer to the Prophets temple, were certain to be doomed.

The prophets, overcome with guilt, and fear for the lives of the earth ponies that placed their trust in their hooves, quickly cast a spell upon everyone within the city, just before the flood sunk the city. The spell was a very powerful spell that gave all the ponies gills for the ability to breath underwater. Normally, this spell can be cast to each individual pony, as a temporary spell. But, to save everpony, the prophets had to cast a much stronger version, that unfortunately, made the effects permanent. The prophets, and the Ponies that were trapped within the city, were now forever bound to the city's watery grave.

As the centuries past, the Ponies and prophets adapted to their new underwater world. They gathered water chestnuts that began to grow soon after the flood. Once a year, they gather close to the waters edge, where a giant fig tree grows. As the fruit falls, it falls onto the surface of the water, which the ponies gather and feast.

With every passing generation, the ponies began to evolve and change, until they became the merponies today. The spell has been passed on so much, that each generation born has more magic packed within it's DNA than the next, making them immune to most (if not all) magic spells. Even the prophets, which became Immortal, evolved into Merponies. But now, the 6 became 5, as one of their female unicorn got kidnapped some time ago. The 5 have their tails tangled together, and their eyes permanently glow white. They all speak in one voice, as if they are one entity.

The Kidnapped Merpony was being shopped across the sea, when she escaped into the ocean. She managed to adapt, and become an Ocean Merpony. But, because of the bitterness in her heart from being kidnapped, she became more sinister. She would sing to enchant other ships that cross her path, and cause them to crash, leaving the male ponies to die, and enchanting the female ponies to become a merpony like her. The Ocean Merponies are all female, and find no greater joy than to sing like sirens and crash ships into the sea.

Aurora is a Lake merpony. Her father is the Prophets announcer, and her Mother is a fig and chestnut gatherer. She's lived in the lake all her life, until two curious ponies from Ponyville (which was actually made by the surviving ponies that escape the city and everfree forest) that somehow found their home. The Ponies were Poindexter the scientist earthpony, and Glory Quest, the archaeologist Unicorn. Glory cast the weaker version of the gills spell, which allowed them to go under water, in search for the ruins of the city that has long been rumored to be there. Aurora met Dexter, and though he was odd looking. But, after showing them to the prophets, and getting to know him and Glory, they convinced her to join them to Ponyville. The prophets made a giant fish bowl on wheels so that she could venture out of the water, without drying out or dying.
