Poem by

"Grandpa would not be proud of me
I've killed 90
Each one, I'm told, was a good hit
Not from where I now sit
I need to tell myself I'm human
but I am lying to myself, I am not human
Not anymore
I am soldier, Forevermore
I press a small piece of metal, that lets a bullet fly
It causes another man to die
91
at age 21
It reminds me what today is, my birthday
makes me think of another day
With Grandpa on his farm
and his new camera, we meant no harm

My spotter's head explodes, I warned him to keep it down
As I swear, I can see Grandpa frown
He did not want me to be around such words, I now use one everyday
everday...everyday...everyday I think of him, everyday
I brush back a tear
I have work to do here

Days later, the war is over, but not the pain
After all of this, what did I gain?
I watch the prisoners go by
when a familiar face catches my eye
The man who killed Grandpa in '41!
I grab someone else's handgun
I empty it into the head of the damn Kraut
I made him paid, there is no doubt

Later, at a "Victory Party" with all the Allies I stare at the old picture of me,
the only, cracked, picture of me
A stupid Brit, with all his teeth, asks why I'm not enjoying myself
Grandpa would be ashamed of what I am, So I, am not proud of myself."

Backstory:

This doll is based on my Red Army girl model, Natashya Ivanov [[ [link] ]]

The chicken-scratch in the frame says "Grandpa's house, 1938, about 1 year before Germany invades Poland, 4 years before the Battle of Stalingrad, and 7 years before the Battle of Berlin.

Let's see, this scene takes place in April of 1945, during the Battle of Berlin. I'm going to say that Natashya the soldier is about...20? So in the picture she'd be about 12. Which means, when she enlisted in the army after her grandpa's farm was burned during the Battle of Stalingrad, in 1945, she was roughly 15-16ish (soldiers were supposed to be 18, but who kept track?)

Anyway, the I thought the hat would give me problems so I wasn't even going to make it, but I think it came out nice. I'm going to post up the color picure of Natashya the Russian peasant next; I love how she came out x3

The photo frame says \"Натащя\": Cyrillic for "Natashya."

I feel it is pretty good, though it is not what I would call "beautiful." It is far to sad and somewhat graphic to be beautiful. (As a Czech, sadness is never beautiful to me, and this one made me cry while I writing it, so I know it is good.)
I felt that she would be ashamed of what she had done.(Which is how many in the West felt after the War, yet no accurate data has come from the Soviets about this, yet many who were heroes during the War dissappeared afterwards.) I kind of got that from her body language and steered the poem in that direction. I also got that from the fact that she carried a photo of herself as a little girl for so long, however pictures and cameras were rare in the U.S.S.R. and there a few cases of Soviet soldiers carrying photographs of complete strangers they found in place of sweethearts and loved ones. I hope you like it.

I like the picture and the back story, it would have been common sort of story that many Red Army soldiers had. (Which sort of explains what they did in Berlin when it fell.)

I would also like to try to make an attempt at a poem for this picture if I may. I feel I may have a good one in the works for it.

Thank you very much!
It is very difficult sometimes to believe that soldiers are normal humans, although they are trained to be as heroes. In those times, it was not rare to see and Ally or Axis soldier 18 years old, or even younger, (or even female in the socialist countries) like Natashya, which I believe the homesickness doubles for them.

Yes, I would love to read the beautiful poem that was inspired by this picture.
