Description Weeee i love this girl so much! and boy did she grow into a pretty young mare!

-----------------------

The wacky looking Filly drew all eyes as soon as she stepped onto the track. Her colouring catching the public’s attention, her conformation the breeders and well anyone who payed the slightest attention to American racing oohed over her bloodlines.

But it was the trainers, jockeys and old track bums that noticed the step. That confident stride and the look in a horses eye that told of untapped potential. Rio had it, but none since had matched, until now.

The filly loved to run; it was plain as day and as her times got faster and faster we felt our hopes grow. So with our approval Geoff entered her in her maiden race.

The Wagga racecourse didn’t know what hit it. The Rexel Hcp was only short, the track fast and the competition well, outclassed. Leaving the competition in her dust she skipped across the line, still well in hand a stunning 5 lengths in the lead.

Oh boy were we excited!

She was next seen in the Seymour Cup, still average distance we figured she would do as well as last time. But we were wrong, seemingly bored with the distance after breaking well she sat in the middle of the pack, creeping along behind the other horses. But when her neighbour bolted away too early she took it as a challenge, and she wasn’t one to pass up a fight.

Working on calming her Syd was doing his best to stop the wayward filly before she burned out. But it was no use, she passed the other filly and took the lead going into the stretch but the closers moved too fast for her and she ended up in 4th.

Saddened by her loss, we decided to wait in Seymour and after a few weeks of serious distance work we decided she was good enough to enter the Seymour Spring Classic, along with her foal hood buddy.

Our two drew positions next to each other, and on the bell both broke like a rocket, with Peri sitting just outside and head bobbing near Ark’s shoulder. As the pair shot around the bend, Syd tapped the filly and sent her round the side, shooting out of the corner and roaring away from the field. She pulled ahead and kept going winning by an impressive 3 length margin.
She wanted distance, so stamina and strength training was on the agenda. Using our new revelation we sent her longer, now at 11 F to the Geelong Classic with Whirly, where she roared in from behind only to snatch a close second from our Bay colt.

Separating our runners again we sent Peri off to Bendigo, and though she liked the distance she found the competition tough managing another close second.

Deciding to cut her a bit shorter we then sent her along with Ark again to the Hon Kong Jockey Club Plate, on that most famous race day of the year. Flemington was to see a reversal of the last time our two raced together. Both broke well and sat in the mid pack with peri slightly ahead. However Ark made his move and rounded the turn shooting ahead while Peri floundered around the tiring runners. Finally breaking free she soared after her mate, for the first time showing her speed and flying home to snatch 3rd.

It was then onto her first Graded race, and again testing her distance we pushed longer than before. The Queen Elizabeth stakes was run on a day that only fish loved. Well fish and our painted wonder.

The track was bogey beyond belief, flooding was occurring around Melbourne and the few horses racing looked miserable on the course. Peri kicked a fuss when she first stepped onto the grass but as soon as they began to jog down to the starting gate she found her stride and seemed to float above the muck.

She rocketed to win by an astounding 6 lengths, leaving her mud soaked rivals lolloping up to the line behind her.

Then it was onto Caufield, tot eh Bagot Hcp, this time she was accompanied by Collie. Both fillies broke well but it was Peri who shot away, using her long legs and phenomenal speed to kick away and win by a nose.

Then figuring she had time for one more race this year we sent her back home for the Tasmanian Derby. Hobart dawned cloudy with rain and we loved it. With the best horses in the state we had a few mudlarks and several decent distance horses competing.

She broke well, Syd’s vision obscured by the rain. He guided her out to sit behind the leaders, further forward than usual, but well ahead of the slow paced closers who were struggling. As they rounded into the straight Syd nudged her and she took off like her name sake. Flying across the line and home for the winter.

I knew she was going to be special. She looks fantastic! I love how you have such a talent for getting horses' anatomy just right for their breed. I'm so jealous. The story of her races makes for a great read too.
