Modeled, surfaced, and comped in Softimage, created the textures using Photoshop and Illustrator.

How would one get into 3D rendering?

Well for most they study computer animation at a university. Some are even self taught using various websites with tutorials, a good example of one is Digital Tutors. ([link] ) Also if you are majoring in computer animation good thing to do is get an internship at a studio learn a lot about the process and the pipeline of how everything comes together.
