The ghostlike nature of the face gives this a whole new dimension as if we're seeing a past or future.
Was it based on a photograph? Just that the face seems so real.

Interestingly enough I wasn't using any reference for the image. It started off simply as a drawing of an eye and then after I while I decided to add a mouth... then a nose ... then some yellow... and then it made sense to me all of a sudden that this was a "Star Captain"
