Description Wanted to fire out a little more than i did the with preview of the project (found in scraps) by focusing in on what many of you had already seen before. Previously the simple sketch on the left, the idea to create a random, uniquely armoured elf turned into the Feanor my mind saw while reading Tolkien's book. Just seemed right since i had been working on Morgoth for some time already, and needed something prominant to add into the piece and balance it out. This one just seemed to fit the bill to me anyway. A younger depiction of the Feanor found in the Silmarillion, i went ahead and kept his hair short. I think it will set him apart from the more common elf appearance people are used to seeing, which is a good thing considering how far back in Tolkien's history he had lived. B&W too..heh, didn't want to spoil too much of it just yet. Perhaps a Morgoth update in the next week or so.

I can't accept his ears but you gave him such beautiful face that the ears are forgiven. Short hair fit him well, a lot of people agree that he was too busy to have long hair. Short hair are simply more practical when one used to spend a lot of time in a forge. Though in my mind he tends to have them long.

Can't wait to see the final image, and more steps if you will show them here

Again, i'm late to reply to such fantastic feedback as this, but i thank you so much for being honest with your opinion.
I'm going to be starting up on these projects again, and this one is in the forefront.

You've had me looking at his ears a little differently of late...
*pause*
We may see a bit of reshaping and or reduction.

Oh, don't worry about me, my Eldar do not have pointy ears so I always see them right away, that's just it. Though if I was drawing Tolkien's elf for someone who follows the pointy ears idea I would make ears more subtle.
Whatever you decide I keep my fingers crossed for this project, can't wait to see the final version

The drawing on the left is wonderful. And the darker, detailed drawing on the right is F*&^ing Awesome!!! Man you are definitely talented!! You are very good at the whole digital imaging thing, which sadly I am not!!

This really is very very beautiful, how did you do it, i mean how did you go from your original pencil sketch to the finished one? Is it done in photoshop? God I wish I could do that! Man you got the skills, and you anatomy is just breath taking!!! Hats off you you buddy, well freakin done!
Best wishes
Robski

Thanks a million for commenting, and i'm glad you enjoyed this one so much. Alot really is going into it.
To answer your question, my process is pencil sketch, scan, and finally colour using Corel Photopaint. I have nothing against PS, i simply learned everything i know on Corel PP.
The colourization (the actual piece is in color) is in layers, starting with a group of solid colours for each main region (flesh, armour, etc.). I keep about a 40% to 50% transparency on this first layer to allow my predone pencil shading through. Then it's a ton of masking, shadows applied, more masking, highlights applied, frequent masked portions of 'median noise' effects to blend (i don't use the blending or 'smear' tool) and touch-ups along the way. All the shadow and highlight additions are done with either directly applied brushes to a seperate layer, or brightness/burn tools to the 'flesh' layer once it's many componant lyers are combined into one. After all of that, a layer of solid linework goes on over everything, with which i use a bunch of feathered masks to fade the lines atop his form out (lines inside the bodies main outline have to assist the form rather than mark it with hard stops...best example being his abdominals.).

To tell you the truth, after looking at your amazing piece 'Moon Ninja', it appears as though you already have a great handle on anatomy as well as shading! Really superb work there!
Hope this helps buddy. And thanks again for stopping by, as well as the +fav and watch!!

there's almost a sense of stained glass rendering which is similiar to high renaisance work here.
it's a beautiful face.

Thanks so much. I'm particularly glad you approve of his facial features, as i did quite a few minute changes from the original sketch there, and around his neck. Had only hoped for the better.

Very nice, it will be especially cool once you add the same kind of depth to the armor.
Just wondering if there is a reason for his right hand being so bright? (Magic maybe?)

SeanRobertCook In reply to Doc-Shadow [2004-12-06 02:08:11 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the comment.
Actually the hand is simply not completed yet. Being so very picky with the design of Feanor's sword, i've been avoiding drawing his hand so as to not get the pose wrong, etc. atop the propped blade.
