Description He had already taken a step on the stairs, when suddenly someone else's footsteps were heard again. These footsteps were heard very far away, even at the very beginning of the stairs, but he remembered very well and clearly that from the first sound, then for some reason he began to suspect that it was certainly here, on the fourth floor, to the old woman. Why? Were the sounds so special, significant? The steps were heavy, steady, unhurried. Now he's passed the first floor, now he's gone up again; it's getting louder and louder! There was a heavy shortness of breath coming in. The third one has already begun... Over here! And suddenly it seemed to him that he was definitely ossified, that it was just in a dream, when he dreamed that they were catching up, close, they wanted to kill, but he was just rooted to the spot and could not move his hands.
And finally, when the guest began to climb to the fourth floor, only then did he suddenly start all over and managed to quickly and deftly slip back out of the hallway into the apartment and close the door behind him. Then he grabbed the lock and quietly, inaudibly, put it on the loop. Instinct helped. Having finished everything, he crouched, not breathing, right now at the door. The uninvited guest was already at the door too. They stood facing each other now, as he and the old woman had done earlier, when the door separated them and he listened. The guest rested heavily several times. "Fat and big, it must be," Raskolnikov thought, clutching the axe in his hand.
At that very moment, small, hurried footsteps were suddenly heard not far away on the stairs. Someone else was approaching. Raskolnikov didn't even hear it at first."Judging by his voice, he must be very young," Raskolnikov suddenly thought. Raskolnikov stood and clutched an axe. He was clearly delirious.
