I just finished this series and I loved it, too. I'm torn between wanting it to stay a perfect, self contained mini-series and wanting a sequel just so the boys can see Human-Beatrice and hang out with her adorable family (and so we in the audience can find out where the hell the Woodsman's daughter was that whole time).
I don't know what to make of the ending though. My initial interpretation was that both Beatrice and the brothers got transported to some fairytale variant of Silent Hill. LOL

The popular theory due to the symbols, is that the unknown is limbo. It's difficult to do a sequel around that. But I would have liked human Beatrix too.

Great depiction of the characters. I loved this series. The animation is great, and the music overall was amazing, depicting the atmosphere of the setting they are in. Kind of wondered at the end, did it seem like a dream or did their adventure really happen? Overall who is/are your favorite characters? What episodes were of most interest? Sorry for too many questions.

The main fan theory is that the Unknown is a sort of dreamspace "limbo" before death. People despair in the limbo, they die. They keep hope, they can live. Sortoff a destiny coin toss. Lots of people think that because the adventure occurs while Wirt and Greg almost drown (and they are in need of medical attention afterwards). Other symbols such as the two coins for the ferry and the lantern bit are inspired by death folklore. So I guess it was just all a dream, but a really significant one.
My favorite is Beatrice, and my favorite episode is the one ont he boat with the frogs.

It was most likely planned as a miniseries and that length was the best one to make sure their budget allows them to give us a great show.
