Description First off, HAPPY BIRTHDAY brendala! Have a Shaggy/Velma sketch because I looooove you!

On to the review! (spoiler free)

Tangled was good. I don't really have a favorite between it and Megamind, since they are both so different. Like the fourth Shrek, I enjoyed that Tangled explored why Rapunzel stayed in the tower and the effects the long stay had on her. She's very afraid of the outside world, but also excited to reach out and run in it (this creates an interesting scene where Rapunzel is exhilarated but feel guilt). This makes the character of mother Gothel interesting too. Not many of the versions of the fairy tale explore the relationship between Rapunzel and Gothel, and in most versions of the fairy tales, we don't even know WHY Gothel took the kid in the first place (aside from revenge on her parents). This really gives Gothel a new dimension. If anything, the movie is more about Gothel and Rapunzel then Rapunzel and Flynn. We barely get a backstory for Flynn. However, all the characters were great, but Maximus the horse takes the cake.

I enjoyed the overall beauty of the film (i'm off to buy a million lanterns, folks). Mostly, I really enjoyed how the characters were always a mix of realistic movement and wacky cartoony poses. Toes would curl in a normal fashion, as the character defies gravity. IT'S GREAT!

I also really love the fact that Rapunzel's hair is almost a character in itself. It's really used all the time. My favorite scene is probably Rapunzel, afraid, HIDING in her hair. It's adorable.

Something else I really enjoyed was what they choose to do with the music. For instance, they reduced the amount of songs to about 3. Two of those songs get a reprise, but it's short. I find in this case, limiting the music did the movie good. The princess and the frog had too much music (They really could have just kept three tunes : The villain song, "Almost there" and the song with the vodoo mistress). It weighted the movie down. Here, this helped. The movie focused more on the characters moving. Lots of physical comedy.

They also have a few characters that don't speak. The king and queen never speak. I find that amazing. All the rest of the voice acting is terrific too.

This movie also explores a bit something I always wanted to write a story about. People with magical healing powers are in terrible danger. Because people would fight over them. I always wanted to do a comic about a poor girl with healing powers being chased down. Maybe I still will.

Generally, great film. Beautiful. Follow nicely the original tale, with a refreshing remake of the Rapunzel character. Girls in towers need some loving and character development, after all.

wow. 8D i just saw this movie today and i gotta say it certainly surprised me. The way i'd been explaining it most of the day was like the Disney version of the first Shrek movies. It was original (almost XD) refreshing and just plain enjoyable to watch. If the story or characters were not to your liking at least the animation was memorable. It was definately a new all time high for Disney animation standards. they'd really been swirlin the crapper til now and i think with this (and i suppose with a little help with the princess and the frog) disney may make an enjoyable come back. (maybe to make up for all this cheezy pop-star crap they've been trying to shove down our 5 year old's throats)

the movie was emotionally gripping and focused more on the youth's determination to break free from set boundries. Its almost funny to think that disney may be promoting 2 particular things. 1) (already demonstrated by Pokemon the first movie) TEARS HEAL EVERYTHING! *giggles* and 2) REBEL AGAINST YOUR PARENTS! (mama know's best mah FOOT!)

secondlina In reply to SollinFaolan [2010-11-28 16:57:59 +0000 UTC]

Technically, it's more "Rebel against those who treat you badly and don't let them fool you". Since Rapunzel was fully willing to return to the tower and still loved Gothel until she realised that Gothel WASN'T her mother. If anything, this movie is about a character that respects her parent to an impossible degree and then realises that all the love, all the promises she put in the relationship meant nothing since it was just a big lie. I think this is more of a cautionary tale about manipulators and liars.

lolz better said i suppose. ^^" i was basing part of my opinion on jokes my friends and i were making throughout the movie itself so i suppose they arent as accurate as yours. but all well right? haha

it was a good movie either way so i have nothing to complain about XD

Flynn and Rapunzel are looking super adorable here! XD

Maximus was definitely the best part of this movie! It was good, but I don't think the characters were developed well enough to give you a good feel of them... also, Disney's way of having the whole black and white view on good vs evil has always annoyed me a little. :/ I wish they would have had Gothel end up caring about Rapunzel and deciding to let her go and die for her as a mother verse the old hag has to fall to her death to be defeated typical Disney ending.

I think I would have enjoyed Gothel actually caring about Rapunzel, but it would have made a very different villain and possibly a different feel. You should check out "Rapunzel's Revenge", it's a great graphic novel where Gothel does care about Rapunzel. It's Rapunzel that break the relationship : [link]

I'll have to see if I can get that in the library tomorrow I always like to see villains with layers as too many stories just forget the human aspect of a character which just seems blah to me.

I just saw this movie today! I could hardly breath for the cuteness. I LOVED IT!
Maximus was hilarious. And you're totally right! It was a lovely balance of hilarious cartoony expressions, yet realistic aspects of the characters, too.
I also loved how they explored the relationship between Rapunzel and Gothel. "Mother knows best!"
And it was great how the King and Queen didn't speak. It was such a powerful moment when they are about to release the lantern, and they hadn't seen their daughter in almost 18 years, and the father is tearing up. So sad!
I also agree on the songs. They kept a few, and they made them awesome. The first "Mother Knows Best" song had hilarious... choreography? I don't know what it's called, but I cracked up so hard when I saw Rapunzel hiding in her little cocoon of hair XD
