Skill(s):
    Flight can fly with wings Literature Control can manipulate books, scripts and text papers

    • Abilities:
      • Can reinforce books so they can take more damage and can be used as shields
      • Can summon creatures (flea - tiger size) from books
    • Limitations:
      • When a book is not handy, she is helpless
      • Books aren't the most portable or compact objects (though she usually has 1 in-hand)
      • Usefulness depends on the quality (fashion magazine vs bestiary) and quantity (single book vs library) of books available
      • Physically weak

Personality/Attributes:
  • Positive traits:
    • 『responsible || organized || outspoken || perfectionist || friendly || supportive || self-reliant || cheerful』
      • Aderyn tends to approach things from a logical standpoint unless it involves romance. She happens to be a hopeless romantic, which may lead to some hasty or misinformed decisions on her part. The small history teacher is outspoken and independent; she will speak up, even if she is intimidated by the person in question, if she feels they are doing something wrong or unfair. She will also, most likely try to see arguments from both sides in order to come to the best possible agreement. She is hardworking, tidy, and organized in both work and her personal life, which lends to her perfectionist attitude. She is also reliable and responsible and can also be a leader when it's required of her, especially if no one else is willing to take up the position. Aderyn is also supportive and friendly, despite being introverted. Additionally, while she may often seem serious to any onlooker, she does show a more lighthearted side when among friends.
  • Negative traits:
    • 『submissive || introverted || clumsy || invasive || low self-esteem || rude || unrealistic expectations || naive || weak || serious』
      • She is primarily concerned with her own thoughts and feelings, and usually won't start a conversation or even speak to someone unless she's spoken to first/is interested in the conversation topic. Aderyn is also predominantly submissive in most aspects of her life. She tries to do most things on her own, but usually ends up tiring herself out which may lead to mistakes. Her wings also make her a bit clumsy at times. She lacks confidence in her appearance and therefore will be oblivious to anyone showing concern for her. She also has unrealistic expectations about love based on what she reads in romance novels. This is also a contributing factor to what one could call her naivete about how things “should work” in life. She is the type who has planned every detail of her life down to the coffin she will be laid to rest in. A disruption in her plans will cause her to become unstable. The teacher has a tendency to be invasive when it comes to others' personal lives. Though she might come off as a kindly woman, it is more likely that she is able to mask her more rude side. She will add little quips and jabs to conversation whenever she feels the need. While she handles her own distress by internalizing it, she cannot handle seeing one of her birds hurt. She might even break down and cry on the spot.

History:
    Aderyn was shunned and neglected by her immediate family, as she was the only monochromatic in the household. She took to stealing items in her preteens, usually items that had particularly entrancing shines, as a way to get her parents—even her brothers—to notice her. Attention-seeking gave way to addiction, and she ended up getting caught stealing from a teacher's desk at school. That certainly got her parents' attention. They sent her to live with her great aunt, who was also the wealthy matriarch of the family. She was not a monochromatic, but she was known in the family for being able to correct the wayward youth. Her parents also saw it as an opportunity to get rid of a “problem child.” Initially, Aderyn was furious with the decision, but later grew to prefer life with her great aunt over her immediate family. Living with her great aunt gave way to reforming her thieving ways, though not entirely. Even in present day, something may catch her eye that she cannot resist. Her great aunt home-schooled her through her teens till she sought higher education. Her great aunt felt it would bring them closer and make the young Aderyn more receptive to her words. In addition, she did not want her niece to endure the prejudices she had been at her old school any longer, normal though they were for someone with Aderyn's traits. Aderyn also acquired an affinity for birds while at her aunt's home as birds often visited the fountain in her aunt's garden, which her bedroom window directly overlooked. She also felt a sort of kinship with them since she too had feathery wings. As her great aunt got older, Aderyn found herself returning the favor she'd given her and taking care of her. The older woman often told Aderyn stories of her youth as an “archeologist for hire,” as she referred to it. Aderyn adored these stories, and they sparked her interest in history. Even as a young girl, she had shown a keen interest in books, and that led her to pursue a career path where she could combine her passions. Life for the pair had been pretty pleasant till that point; then Aderyn's younger cousin, Shahnaz, moved in with them. Shahnaz 's entire being was abrasive. Now that their great aunt was much older, it was more of a chore for her to try and change him for the better. Aderyn tried to help with the matter—even going so far as to try and understand and empathize with him—to no avail. The boy was as strong-willed as a mule. Their great aunt, though she was in ever-failing health, would not give up so easily. She told Aderyn that she had something special planned and instructed her to give the boy a letter with a key enclosed, which was hidden in one of her dresser drawers, after she passed on. The key was to a cursed box which was hidden in her closet, as she didn't want to get it mixed up with the other cursed items she kept in a spare room. The old woman instructed her niece to place the box at a location she'd marked on a map when she passed on as well. When the time came, Aderyn did as she was asked and placed the letter within the boy's reach and placed the box where she was instructed to. Her great aunt's passing wore on her though she was happy to find that she was the beneficiary of her great aunt's home and wealth. She still carried on the work of caring for her bratty younger cousin. Much to her dismay, the curse her great aunt had placed on the boy was also a pain for her. They also made it hard for her to teach him at home, as her great aunt had done for her. One day while reading the evening news, she came across an article on the Monochromatic Academy. She'd mostly heard about the school in passing before, but now it intrigued her. It saddened her that she had not attended such a place in her youth, but she felt it was the perfect place for her younger cousin to get an education and grow—and save her the stress of it herself. When she called the school to seek more information, she also inquired about a position for herself as a history teacher or possibly a librarian and was delighted to find there was an opening for both.

Etc.:
  • She has a pet parrot, Nicoletta, (usu. on her shoulder when not on its swing in the library) that she has taught to tell people to “shush” in the library. It also occasionally announces embarrassing things Aderyn has said from time to time or things pranksters have taught it to say. It is named after a heroine from one of her favorite romance novels (based on the Timneh African Grey Parrot ).
  • Aderyn "speaks/emotes" with her largish wings which often leads to her hitting someone or knocking other things over.
  • She slips into bird puns whenever she is feeling a strong wave of emotion, i.e. anger or excitement.
  • She keeps an aviary in the school garden and sometimes places injured birds in it for care until they are healed and ready to fly again.
  • Aderyn enforces recycling and green alternatives.
  • She has a fear of ghosts due her aunt's collection room, which she has locked up tight and has kept the key to.
  • Her wings are 4 1/2 ft in span.
  • She has a tendency to get caught when eavesdropping.
  • Source of birdcage-inspired, wedge heels
