Description Ettingdon Park Hotel in the U.K. was the (exteriors only) location for MGM's 1963 horror classic "The Haunting" - a truly eerie yet beautiful place.

Such a brilliant film. Actually like it a little better than the book it was based on. It's one of those movies that you can watch over and over, and see something new each time that you missed before. Everything is so subtle and so suggestive, and yet if you look closely at, you can see that the movie is constantly giving you clues about what's going on and, at the same time, teasing you by never revealing the whole picture. I'd like to say they don't make them like that anymore. but the truth is, they never made them like this. It's one a kind.

Bit of trivia: a few years back, this place, Ettingdon Park, held of screening of The Haunting, and Richard Johnson (Dr. Markway in the film) was there to attend. At one point during a Q&A, an audience member how he felt about being back there. He responded that it was actually the first time he had ever been inside. They used this house only for the exterior shots of Hill House in the movie, and everything else was a film set. None of the actors ever actually went inside.
