Description Artemis, Goddess of the Moon and the Hunt, sister to Apollo.
I made this for the God/Goddess contest for
Be gentle, this is technically my first photoshop drawing.
It has taken a very very long time to do. I learned a lot about photoshop while I was working on this.

For the process I drew a pencil sketch, then scanned it and painted with photoshop, so those were the mediums I used.
I used a picture reference ([link] the movie cover of King Arthur) and another reference for the Greek dress [link]

I hope you guys like it!

Update: May 11, 2010

I fixed up some of the things that were really bugging me about this; unfortunately I'd have to change a lot more if I wanted this to look any better. So I'm setting this one aside. Maybe one day in the future I'll look back at this and see easy ways to improve it, but I'm moving on for now. So here's the final update on this one.

its ok. i get the concept, but here bottom half looks unfinished. i also feel that it looks kinda flat. maybe add more darker shades and highlights to bring it out more. also since its vector-ish how about some line art here and there?

seishyn In reply to beetum [2008-06-11 02:27:09 +0000 UTC]

Yeah it's a work in progress. I mentioned that in my description, lol.

I'll see how it looks to add in some lineart. That's a good idea. What do you mean by vector-ish, out of curiosity?

Anyway thanks for the advice!

Oh see i skimmed through the description i missed it then
looks vectorish because it's flat. I think lineart will help bring it out and keep colors in boundry lines. try it.

i thought artimis had red hair...

seishyn In reply to Katiefrowns92 [2008-05-13 03:15:15 +0000 UTC]

I've never heard that. There's an olympian god comic where her hair is reddish, but in actual Greek Mythology I did not find any mention of her hair color.
Most of the art I looked up online and the art in my Greek mythology books portray her with brown hair, and I think it fits her so I drew her as a brunette.

I love her eyes, they're very pretty! You've got a nice start to shading. The back hand looks fantastic; you really got the form of the fingers and the play of light down!

For coloring suggestions, just keep doing what you're doing A few more details you could add on the face for shading is the cleft between the lips and nose, the eyelids and maybe a hint of cheekbone.

For anatomy, there are two things that stick out. One is the size of the head; it's rather big. Generally the length of the head (from chin to the top of the head) is the same length as from the chin to the nipples (if the figure is standing straight, anyway). Here the head length goes from chin to almost past the bottom of her breasts, to give some perspective.

Also, the back arm is bugging me. The upper arm isn't fleshed out enough, particularly as it goes back to meet the elbow. Hard for me to explain; if you want I can red line over your image and show you what I mean

Keep up the great work!

Thank you sooo much for the critique. I really appreciate it

I haven't done very much shading for the arms or torso yet, , I spent so much time on the hands last time I was too lazy to finish all her skin. I agree, the back arm is bugging me too, not just the shading but the position, too. I think it's angled wrong, so I'll get to that.

I agree I need to shade the face more, and since I haven't really worked on the neck down too much, it shouldn't be too hard to adjust the body to fit the size of the head better, I'm so glad you mentioned that.

Again thank you so much!

I think her hair should have a bit more detail, and if you can you should bring her chest up just a bit, and of course more shadows. But I have a feeling that was coming. Otherwise very nice! Good luck!

OK, if you go for realism you should not forget the shadows! They are everywhere, especially the dress, hair, the armpit of her right arm etc. Though she, being the goddess, could be a source of light, but in this case you should add some glowing around her. And I also think her eyes are too small. But the rest is pretty good, I wish you luck in the contest

^^ she's awesome!!
Wait ... I said silver didn't I? XD I'm so blond I'm jumbling out the words that are tumbling out of my head. Next thing we know, I'll be saying "ice-cream" or "PLUMNUTS!!!" in the middle of my sentences XD
What I meant to say before was:

"Yay finally! Someone that drew Artemis and colored her with a sliver bow! Not a gold bow! [that would be Apollo ....>.>] XD"

But anyway, I can't wait to see the outcome of your work
