Description This is my old man, Mike. We took him out today, but it was too hot for him. He only mildly enjoyed it. But I got some nice pictures! He's a Shepherd/Pittbull mix btw.

did you know his parents? the reason i ask is he resembles a Carolina Dog more than any pitt/shepherd I have ever seen; and being a veterinary nurse for 13 years, i seen many! what ever he is, he's quite charming...

Gads, Ive been saying the same thing for years! But he was a stray so I don tknow where he came from. I live in upstate NY in the country and i thought it was more likely that he was a mix of some kind rather than a Carolina Dog. A Shep/pittbull was my best guess (hes got big shep ears, the almond eyes, the big muscle head of a pitt and the slender frame alot of them have, plus his coloring is fawn but with a little black mixed in on his back and tail). But, he certainly could be a carolina. I discovered them years ago and was like *OMG! Thats Mike!!* Ive never met one, just seem pictures on the net, but they certainly look alike!

I have some other pics of him - [link] [link] [link] What do you think?

well, there is a wide range in the different "varieties" that can exist in a carolina dog. remember-they have been genetically linked as very similar to the dingo of australia, so much so that they are often called the "american dingo". i seriously believe he is of significant lineage... if you where to waltz into my hospital with him, say you just founf him, and what is he/ i'd say calonia dog. and my fellow co-workers and vets know i am very good at identifying dogs... i did training and the dog show circuit for years! i am from s. cakalaky, and yes, they are a frequent "cur" dog that wander about like any stray, breeding indiscriminately with other domestic dogs... if he is not full-blooded, he's very high percentage!
i like to say this about dog breeds-they truelly are all MUTTS, when you get to the heart of the dog. each breed may have some physical or personality characterists in common, but they are all from the same blueprint. i've seen blonde, black, black and tan, and like Mike, rich red & cream carolinas. they are a bit like a jack russel terrier-it's hard to describe one, but you know it when you see it.
these dogs are linked with following the paleolithic hunters over the land bridge, and are not unusual along the eastern coast... for years, locals occasional caught, befrended, or tamed them... they make loyal companions, are relatively a silent dog (not yappy, like a shelty, or overly sensitive to stimuli, like a rotti) they are good trackers, and i have been told, make fine retrievers! i hope this helps in giving you a better idea of mike's parentage... i certainly believe he doesn't have a pitt/shepherd personaily... my guess is he is not too hyper, certainly not overly barky, maybe a little aloof, attached mainly to one person, patient with cildren, and content to wonder off if allowed to. these dogs are often naturally friendly, even after isolated packs have been found that have had little human contact. i would love it if one found me! oh-and one last thing-don't fret about his age-this is a hardy breed, that has been moulded by nature, not man... so they tend to not have the horrific cancers and hip problems of their pure-bred brothers...

Mike was an absolute crazy dog for years. Hes calmed ALOT in his old age, but in his youth he was just terrible. He was only a few months old when I got him (his ears hadnt even stood up yet) and I dont know if the people hwo had him abused him or if something happened while he was loose. I know he had owners because he was found with a collar on, but the dog warden never found his people.

As soon as I got him we were inseperable. He was obsessed with me and couldnt even stand it if I left the room just to use the bath room. My door still has all the claw marks on it (he almost made it thru!). Hes not a very vocal dog, he rarely barks, but if Ive been out of the room for too long, hell howl and whine like crazy. (I share a hosue with my parents and they have their own pets. mine stay in my *apartment rooms* and dont mingle with theirs) When he was a puppy he would pee on the bed (marking it) and chew/eat everything he could get a hold of. I thought hed grow out of it, but he only did a few years ago! Once when I went to visit family for a week, I took everything out of my room that he could destroy. He had his toys, of course, but nothing of mine. Well, he showed me! He chewed a hole in my matress 3' wide!

Mike is very very smart and learns fast, especially from watching me do something. He knows to copy me (or who ever it is hes watching). Hes never been what I would call hyper, just overly obsessed with being with me at all times. But I dont mind. Ive always said hes my soul mate. I wish I could take him everywhere with me! But hes not good with strangers. Well, on a leash at my side hes very well behaved. But hes beautiful and people want to pet him. He can tolerate being pet breifly, but it gets overwelming for him. He bit a friend of mine, just a nip, because she was petting him and he just coudlnt take it. With work, though, he will come around. It took a little while, but my boyfriend and him are good friends now. Theyre very cute together.

How are Carolina dogs with other animals? Mike loves most animals, cats especially. Hes great with female dogs and puppies (and kittens are a HUGE favorite. even baby bunnies!). But hes not good with small pets like birds and rats. Hes killed 2 rats and parrot of mine. Though I have to point out that I had all for quite some time. One rat I had for 3 years. She was dying from old age and only when she started to get sick did he show any interest in her. The same for my parrot. I had him over a year when he developed kidney problems. Mike took no notice of him untill he was almost dead from his illness. Hes also killed a wild rat and mouse he found in the house. I know that given the chance, he would love to hunt. I should also tell you, so you dont htink hes some crazy killer dog, that he shares my rooms with another dog (Puppis, an American Eskimo), 10 cats, a bunny, and a rooster, all of wich are loose, 24/7. I also have a cockateil, turtle and 2 caged hens. Mike is a good boy and gets along well with everyone.
