Sir, you cannot afford that.

Then can I have pop on the rocks?

IF YOU CANNOT AFFORD A FRIGGIN' ROCK YOU CAN'T AFFORD NUTHING.

THEN I GUESS I MUST GO WITHOUT NUTHING

Whoa, bugger. I love the detail and value contrasts in here! You've done a pretty darn amazing job on the bark, leaf, and rock textures. And good image composition too. Keep it up!

Beautiful! I love the forest and the attention to detail. I also like the high contrast it really brings the form of the rocks out. The only thing I would say is maybe try to punch out your figures from the background. You do have a nice diagonal of light color going right to where they are though. I'm really, really impressed by the textures of everything. Is this done in graphite or charcoal or something else?

Sejuay In reply to Lucid-Crimson [2007-08-05 02:58:00 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I agree, I realised after the fact what the problem is with the figures; they seem to be lit from a less sharp angle than the rocks and everything else. There should be a bright edge on them, like on the rocks. Although I think there's something to be said for the way they blend into the scenery.

It's actually done in plain old HB pencil. After scanning I increase the contrast, though, so it looks like charcoal. I've yet to touch anything that isn't erase-able.

Lucid-Crimson In reply to Sejuay [2007-08-06 15:34:46 +0000 UTC]

Wow, just an HB, major props! If you want to have some fun wander down to your local art supply store and try a 6B or an 8B (B is for bold and H is for hard although I don't for the life of me know why it isn't H for hard and S for soft but sometime in the ancient past the pencil gurus decided it should be H and B an HB being halfway on the hardness softness scale. A 9B is like drawing with a crayon almost and a 9H is like drawing with a nail). With the 6B and up you can get some really nice darks without having to press really hard, although the flipside is they smear more easily.

Sejuay In reply to Lucid-Crimson [2007-08-06 18:50:09 +0000 UTC]

Yes, smearingness is a major hazard for me. Also I'm a perfectionist when it comes to getting shapes and proportions exactly right, so I like stuff to be cleanly eraseable. Thanks for the tip!

Same here.... part of the joys of digital art though Try putting a piece of paper underneath your hand so you don't drag it through what you just drew, that helped me.

It looks like a photograph, I swear. How you can get so much freaking DETAIL in without (or with...) directly tracing something is way beyond me. You, sir, are amazing.

*scrolls back up to sit and stare at the screen*
Yay alliteration!?

I use photo references and my pictures still come out "okay." Nothing great. Sometimes not even "okay." Guess you just have a good eye for it.

I suppose so. The downside is I'm totally without skill when I don't have photo references.

Why, then my pictures must be very ... needy. Years and years!! Arrrgh!

But yes. I'm glad I finished it too.

Wooww! Fantastic picture!

Superb soft shadowing you used. How many pencils did you go through to get this much detail into the picture? Really nice job with the rocks and the foilage all around the background. It really feels like a genuine forest themed picture, all the way down to the leaves on the forest floor.

Well done!

Sejuay In reply to Bri-Rock [2007-07-12 03:14:12 +0000 UTC]

Actually, I went through surprisingly few pencils! I use a mechanical pencil, and it seemed to have never-ending lead ... I started a new lead-thing just before finishing it, but that's all.

Thanks for the comment! I'm starting to feel critical, though. Do you think the wuffs look a bit ... different from the rest of the picture? It seems like their shadows don't blend in with all the others.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Bri-Rock In reply to Sejuay [2007-07-13 19:13:09 +0000 UTC]

No I think that they blend in quite nice with the way they're shaded. Maybe perhaps towards the left side it could have been one shade darker, but that's an over-critical observation. It looks great!

Ladyeternalflame [2007-07-08 19:48:14 +0000 UTC]

Amazing, the detail is gorgeous, great job on the shading, I normally do not work so hard on shading my drawings. It's very well done, beautiful. They looks like werewolves to me, taking shelter among the rocks.

Dude! Wow, dude, wow.
That is a beautiful scene and even more beautiful pencil work.
How long did that take you?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sejuay In reply to PyroTeamkill [2007-07-08 18:22:07 +0000 UTC]

The start date and end date are noted on the picture. In terms of actual work ... Well I spent all day yesterday, literally all day on my butt (except for a few hours to go see some shows.) finishing the shading of the rocks and trees and stuff. In advance of that ... Who knows??? Thanks for the comment.

PyroTeamkill In reply to Sejuay [2007-07-09 08:04:28 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah. Silly me.
That is a stupidly long time.
You must have outstanding patience to have gone back to it over that period of time.

Sejuay In reply to PyroTeamkill [2007-07-09 14:06:49 +0000 UTC]

Well, most of that time was solid smackdab not-working-on-it-at-all. Then 15 months later going, "Hey, I should work more on this."
