Description The small figure perched impossibly on the wall, one hand holding onto the top edge of the window frame, both legs on the wall beneath it. Her free arm reached out, easing the window open a crack. Immediately she stopped, listening for any sort of sound change. The figure in the bed was silent still, and she waited like that for a full five minutes, the arm supporting her burning. With light fingers, she pushes the window open a bit more, shifting her weight to perch on the sill.
Kai grew still again, reddish eyes watching the unmoving form of the man below. He hadn't made a sound. Not a snore, not a grunt. Something felt wrong. A smart assassin would have left then, but Kai instead drew a combat knife, wicked edge razor sharp. She had been hired to kill Gary Avene, and she would do it no matter what. Like a cat, she sprung from the window, coming down at the still figure, knife right for his chest.
Like butter it sunk in, but there was no spurting of blood, no jerk from the victim, no shout. Immediately Kai pushed off the springy matress, pulling her bloody knife free with a grating against a rib that made her shudder.
Gary Avene was already dead. Who would have come for him the same night she had? Red eyes moved over the darkened room, stopping on nothing for more than five seconds. There was no sound, no movement. Nothing.
"Suprised?" A voice spoke finally, and the girl's head snapped in the direction, just in time to see a flash of silver reflecting from the open window.
Not wasting what precious time she had, Kai simply dropped like a stone, the throwing knife skating over her stomach. It sliced through the fabric of her long sleeved, black shirt effortlessly, leaving a long, shallow cut over pale skin.
"You stupid bitch. Do you really think we would set up Gary to take the fall and not find out who else is bidding on the dock?"
No more knives were flung at her, and Kai carefully rose to her feet, shifting her shirt to hide the cut on her stomach though it stung.
"So tell me, little rat. Did Gaetano send you?" A shift in the shadows revealed to Kai the exact location the voice was coming from. There was only one person. It was a man, larger than her, and likely weight a good fifty pounds more at least.
"Well? Who sent you? Giovanni? Trinity? Who?" She didn't answer still, red eyes
emotionless as her hands twitched slightly, getting her weapons ready.
"What a good little sacrifice you are then. Your master will meet you in hell." Instead of a knife, the figure lifted a gun, aiming it at her.
If there was something she hated more than anything, it was guns. So unrefined. Kai didn't give him a chance to fire, placing her foot on the wall an inch behind her. Instead of simply rushing him, and thus rushing the bullet, she dove, doing a somersault across the floorspace between them.
The gun went off as she dove, the man a good enough marksman to follow some of her movement. Coupling the dull ache in her arm and the sting across her stomach, the pain in her shoulder was sharp, bringing her to reality with jarring force. However, the man made a grave mistake in not expecting her to fulfill the attack, not even pausing in the crouch the roll left her in.
Like a tightly wound spring she uncoiled, the knife now in her hand rising up to the closest vital point. Warmth gushed over her hand, body fluids staining the fine carpet of the bedroom. She didn't stop there though, even as the man dropped the gun to clutch at his genitals. Putting her entire body into the knife, she rose, grating against pelvis, his soft belly splitting like a ripe fruit.
As Kai stepped back, death dawned on the man, as his intestines fell with a sick plop onto his grasping hands. In agonizing slow animation, the man fell to his knees, fingers glistening with his own blood.
Reaching forward, Kai grabbed the man's hair, pulling his eyes up to meet hers, even as they start to glaze over, his death catching up with the rest of him. "Do not play with the Domani. Your master will meet you in hell."
She didn't walk to the window and painfully hoist herself into it until the man's body had a light dusting of fine, grey, wood ash over it. The body of Gary Avene was left in his bed, long since growing cold. Kai was quite certain that they would be able to figure out what had happened, and the name Domani would grow.
