For those of you who are too young to remember, parents used to keep syrup of ipecac in medicine cabinets in case a child swallowed something he shouldn't. Once poison control hotlines became common, and people realized it sometimes did more harm than good, they were advised not to use it anymore.

After I had the idea for this, I looked up the Wikipedia entry on Earthbound to make sure Ness HAS a mother. Usually in these games, kids are orphans or just left to their own devices. Not only is she present, but she plays a role in the game.
