Description The Lorax was my favourite Seuss book and I enjoyed the short film as well; and I'm kinda annoyed by the feature length film. Initially I thought they would do a good job of it, but from what I've seen ([link] ) it looks as if Seuss' well-known moral of the story is completely shot. This is my tribute to the original, as its message has stood the test of time:

Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing's going to get better. It's not.

I hope I haven't sounded too preachy. I'll get back to doing some original work soon instead of fan art Thanks for looking!

Just saw the Lorax and went hunting, this is a beautiful picture, and it's amazing how much it catches in one go. Great job!

I love the Lorax!! I am actually thinking of after I graduate from art school going back for a degree in marine biology. Yeah global warming is scary. I know that the earth has a natural stage where it will gradually warm up and then cool back down, but we have sped up the warming process by at least 15 years. It's like yes the Earth would have done this naturally, but we have had an unnatural effect on this process which is causing most of the problems we have today and it will only get worse. It's happening so fast that quite a few animals can keep up with the changes. It's very sad to say the least.

That would be great! My recent TA was striving to become a marine biologist. I was kind of envious, but I don't think I'd fare well in the ocean
But you're right, we've sped up the warming process--but much faster than 15 years! In the pleistocene, there was a 7 degree increase over 3 million years... and that was a huge change! We're looking at the minimum of two degrees just by the end of the century! That kind of drastic change isn't good for any kind of feedback loop system.
To quote from an article: "The warming of the past centuryβ€”0.7 degrees Celsiusβ€”is roughly eight times faster than the ice-age-recovery warming on average."

So, yes, it's very depressing But I get some consolation out of the fact that even if we wipe out ourselves and most life, we can't kill it all--the Earth will be okay in the end [or for the next few billion years, anyway]

Yes the Earth will still keep going and that is definitely nice to know. I just wish people would try and do something before it is too late to save themselves. It's just frustrating.

aww global warming is so sad ;-; what gets me is people who still don't believe it exists.

this is really moving. The lighting is absolutely beautiful. I can see it being a sombre piece, but I took it as ray of hope X3
magenta plus teal always wins *w*

Yes! Me too... it's very saddening how people choose to be ignorant about it.

But I'm glad that you caught that it's supposed to be a "Ray of hope" While solemn, it's supposed to be hopeful too c:

no critique option?? ok, i'll paraphrase then;
Love the colour options and depth in this image, if there was one thing I would suggest is make the Lorax stand out a little more. I had to click the larger icon to make out wat exactly was in the bottom right corner of the image. it's not that I couldn't tell, but it wasn't so clear. I think it has to do with his almost greyed colour which is much like the background.
Otherwise, I love the detail and colour choices for the rest of the image, it really sets the mood!!!

My premium ran out, so I can't "formally" ask for critiques anymore.
Thanks for the critique though! Unfortunately I'm somewhat at a loss on how I could improve him, despite your suggestions. He's this furry, lumpy, no-neck little guy... can anyone tell what he is without zooming in? And I didn't really want him to stand out too much either, I wanted the tree to be the main focus. But maybe he stands out TOO much then? Meh.
I'm glad you like it though (: I've been having lots of fun with depth and textured brushes lately

i would just alter his colour a little bit so that it has less grey, or maybe add some more highlights in his body?

I used to get scared from Dr. Suess' The Lorax . . . But it was my favorite story of his.
I've never watched either of the films, but I can't help but think about "The Grinch" long feature film, and how it really moved the story around. It came with the moral, but it was a kind of a last-second thing, you know?
Well, what I'm trying to get at is I hope they don't do that with this film.

By the way, I absolutely love this masterpiece; it expresses a lot of emotion and reflects great talent.

I hope the film's not as bad as it looks! And thank you for the lovely compliments

Oh it was no problem! I meant it!
Ah, I was just a little scared of the Once-ler because of Dr. Suess's description of his voice; his tendency to only show his eyes and gloves confused me when I was younger. I was an easy one to scare!
I loved how fluffy the trees were! I used to dream about how the truffula trees felt . . .

If there's one thing the new film did pull off, it was making the trees seem so darned soft! The once-ler I always loved; he just seemed like a bitter old guy who regretted too much of his life. But I always seem to get along with those types in real life, so that could by why I never feared him

Soapy-Lump-Nugget In reply to Selladorra [2012-03-26 08:08:52 +0000 UTC]

Yes! Modern animation makes everything look soft or fluffy!
I was always scared of old people and babies as a kid. Now I get along with people who are around the marrying age and also with teenagers. I don't know why.
I use an awful lot . . . .

I was always scared of police men! I was always afraid I was going to do something to make one mad I actually loved old people as a kid I always went up to them and chatted up a storm (according to my mom). I don't know why either!

Hahaha I was scared of principals because I thought I would go to jail or something if I accidentally made them mad
I was scared of old people as a kid because my mom's parents used to come visit me. They don't speak my language so I always thought they were plotting evil demolition acts

I really loved the new feature-film, but that's because they made the Once-ler a real person with hopes and dreams and regret. Perhaps the story was more effective leaving him as green hands, but I can't help but love the new dopey version. I also thought they did a fair job of conveying the original message, though not nearly as potently as Dr. Seuss himself did.

This is beautiful, and conveys the message purely emotionally... wonderful

I haven't seen it, unfortunately, so I can't say for sure what it's like, I can only form opinions based on what I've seen reviewed of it. I'm sure it's not a terrible film in itself, I'm just a fan of the original.
Thank you very much, though! I appreciate it!
