All the girls he knew were crazy about him. All of them would do anything he asked. Anywhere he went, all of them would follow.

All of them, apart from her.

They had known each other for a long time but they had never been really close. His egocentric attitude got on her nerves. Her cold demeanor put him on edge. Their characters clashed. Yet, he wanted her to like him. He wanted her to fall for him. He just couldn’t stand the fact that she was completely ignoring him. No one ignored him.

He had tried many times to draw her attention, but to no avail. Showing off to her simply did not work. All he earned was a fed-up glare or, in the best case, a “shut up, Mei”. She seemed to put up with him only for the sake of the long years they had known each other.

Why? Why? WHY?

Many a time he had wondered why. His wish to make her his bordered with obsession. He could never share his thoughts with anyone, however. He couldn’t ask for advice. He couldn’t do anything about his problem. He, who was called the Prince of the Capital, could not fall so low as to obsess over a mere girl.

But he would do it. He would make her his. No matter the cost.

She was walking by the riverbank when she saw him. He was sitting near the water, his arms wrapped around his knees. Golden locks shone under the orange sky. She wanted to walk past him, to pretend that she hadn’t seen him. Yet, something pulled her towards him. He was alone, quiet, lost in his thoughts. She had never seen him like that.

She climbed down the small hill to reach him.

“Mei…?”

He shot her a quick glance and then looked away.

“Mei, are you okay?”

“I’m fine. Can you just leave me alone? Please…”

Please…? There was no way she’d leave him alone. Mei would never ever say “please”.

“No.” He turned to stare at her. She realised what a terrible condition he was in. “I’m not going anywhere until you tell me what’s wrong.”

He didn’t know why, but he was desperate to let go. It could have been the fact that she was staring steadily at him, her gaze clear, sincere, not judging. He wanted to tell her everything.

And he did.

He told her how everyone’s aspirations were dragging him down, expectations putting too much pressure on his shoulders, teammates looking up to him every time to bring them out of pinches, women hoping for him to be their prince on the white horse. He didn’t mind all that; he really didn’t. Actually, he would miss it if it disappeared. It was just that he wanted a break. He needed to recharge. He wanted something to give him strength. He wanted someone to give him strength.

She moved closer and pulled him in her arms, saying nothing. She didn’t judge him. He was human after all, and she knew that better than anyone. She had sensed what hid under the mask of his ego. Many a time she had wished that he would shed his façade and show his true self. Show her his true self.

Her embrace felt like a breeze of fresh air in the stale environment that surrounded him. He took a deep breath, relishing in the refreshing feeling. Tears welled in the corners of sapphire eyes. He didn’t fight to hide them. She just held him tight. He was protected.

He broke away and looked at her. She returned the gaze, honest, strong. It was as if she were saying "I’m here for you". He cupped her cheeks and placed a reluctant kiss on her lips. It lasted only a moment, but it was real. She placed her palms on his, holding them in place against her skin. He leaned in and, more confidently, he locked his mouth with hers. Her arms slid down and wrapped around his back. She was his. Really his.

“I made out with her.” The words slipped out of his lips before he could stop them. The bad side of his nature had taken over. He couldn’t resist bragging about it. Even for just this once. One phrase.

And she found out. One of the girls that always flocked around him confronted her about it. He had hurt her. For the sake of his ego, he had brought down the only haven where he could be himself.

I made her mine. And I lost her. Forever.
