Description This is a piece I did for Creature Planets Comaption over at CGHUB.

This was the brief we were given:

The Durosni is a small aerial scavenger that resides in the Arctic Tropospheric zone of the planet Hull. This small planet has recently come into the IWCA's knowledge as one that can support life. This small, cold planet is known for it's methane atmosphere and low gravity. It is a profound reminder that life in the universe can turn up in the most surprising of places.

Bioform Notes
Type: Aerial Carnivorous Scavenger
Stuns prey by ramming

Location of Senses: centralized on the body (in one location)
Primary sense: Visual: 14 monochromatic sensitive Superposition eyes.
Secondary sense: Taste

Fig1.
The skin produces a oily slime which protects againts moister loss and temperature regulation in the lower temperatures.

Fig1.2.
Micro scopic view of slime gland.

Fig2
Due to the Durosni being mainly nocturnal and with the low light level during the day.
The eyes can deal with very low light conditions and is able to see UV light which is believed to be linked with their purple coloured limbs.
Which is understood that they use as birds do to distiguish indeviduals.

Fig3
Stiff hairs located on the back allow the creature to detect vibrations in air currents increasing its spacial awerness.

Fig4
This is the mineral Oxidizer the Durosni has to consume to aid with its Anorobic Matabolism.
Its produced as a by-product of the life functions of bacteria found through out Hulls soil.

Fig5
The overies are situated insde the large flat tales of the females and is entered via a hole on the underside.

Fig6
A crystal formation formed on the end of tube of cartalige acts like a Haltere which is found on most earth hover flies and gives Durosni better control in the air.

Fig7
Holes located near the chest allow Methane and Amonia to enter the body and be processed for energy

The Durosni do not respire instead it uses the holes in it chest to draw in Methane and Amonia and processes them as a fuel (food) it gets other chemiclas and minerals it needs from consuming other lifeforms (mostly carrion).

The Durosni has to consume a mineral that is found in most places on Hull, which it uses as a oxidiser to aid its anarobic motablisim. This mineral like substance is a byproduct of bacteria like organisms life functions.
the Durosni often build their hives near more dense collections of this oxidising deposite.

The durosni use their hardened mantal to hammer at rocks to build their hives and for fighting.

Those wings are not attached via a limb, infact they are extensions of the lower ribs which have become highly evolved.
The short wing length and comparison week muscles are counter acted by the lower gravity and thicker air.

The male durosni uses that dextrus hand not only for food manipulation but to inplant his sperm into the female via the females openings under her tale shown in the image of a female below.

He has to place a packet of sperm into each whole which a passage leads to the ovary. Only 5 eggs at one time will be laid and allow to hatch even so all the other eggs have been impregnated.

I really love the concept and how in depth this goes in to creating such an outbound creature, it may not be beautiful but.. the concept is just simply amazing.
