I heard somewhere that Jesus was born in that part of the world because those people were the only ones who would stoop low enough to execute Him. Any other nation would have recognized Jesus and revered Him as their true King.
It's pretty ironic when you think about it; the people accused Him of blasphemy and treason, and they themselves committed the most blasphemous, treasonous act imaginable. It was the absolute worst miscarriage of justice. Even the Romans knew they were murdering an innocent man in cold blood, though there wasn't much most of them could do about it. I can't imagine how hard it must have been for the centurion (and all of Jesus's other followers and friends) to watch this awful event play out.
And yet Jesus had the perfect power to stop all of it, at any time. That's what moves me the most, and I'm not surprised that people cry so much at Aslan's death in the Narnia books.
It's okay about the pictures. I've yet to complete your picture, too. Good art is worth the wait.
If you do something like this again, I'd like to see these characters at the cross next. Feel free to include your own characters if you wish. I definitely intend to do more art like this myself.

If I may, I don't think it's bloody enough to really warrant a mature filter. The blood is hardly noticeable at all.

I would love to remove the mature filter, the blood is barely noticeable. Sadly I have had my pictures reported and deleted for less than that. So I feel it's safer to leave it on. I will remove it. If I get a warning, I will add it back on.

Okay, no problem! Just thought I'd mention it. If you'd added more blood running down his face or bloody stripes on his back from the scourging, then yes, the mature filter would be warranted.

That's because this is based on a crossover story that and I are working on. It's called, "Following Jesus."

What's most tragic is that Jesus didn't deserve any of this. He was completely innocent, and even the Romans knew it. Pilate would have gladly let Him go if the people hadn't pushed and shoved so much and raised such a fuss. The Pharisees pulled off an illegal trial and tried to rush through it as quickly as they could so as to avoid having Jesus die on their holy day. They even brought in false witnesses to "testify" against Him. This was all so they could preserve their own petty positions in society, remove the "competition," so to speak. It shows how cowardly they truly were, just like King Herod when he went after poor, defenseless babies who couldn't fight back; I wonder if Herod would have been so bold had Jesus been a grown man at the time.
And then the Romans dragged out the actual execution, making the death as slow and public and excruciating as possible, to the point where death was a mercy when it finally came.
It was the absolute worst miscarriage of justice imaginable.
On top of that, Jesus's own friends and disciples had abandoned Him; one of them sold Him out for thirty measly, cold-hearted pieces of silver. And He was still suffering from the weight of sorrow and sin He'd carried in the Garden of Gethsemane. Talk about a bad day.
And yet, the whole time, Jesus had perfect power to stop it and He didn't. I think it's no coincidence that Aslan's sacrifice in The Chronicles of Narnia bears so many similarities. All of this was put up with through sheer love for us and concern for our own souls. Only someone with no heart could not be moved by such a sacrifice.
Anyway, you did very well, as always, and you don't need to apologize. You have your life to live and it was worth the wait. I think it's kind of neat that you included your own characters in this. I'll say it again: I'd buy a lot more commissions from you (a truckload, at least) if I could afford it.
