Description Mostly healed up now, so hopefully there'll be more art soon. For now, here's some more photos.

The F-82E Twin Mustang was basically exactly that: two P-51H Mustangs joined together. First, it was built anticipating that the US would have to invade Japan, and might need aircraft with more staying power over the Home Islands. After the end of WWII, the F-82 was meant to escort B-29s on nuclear missions into Russia. It worked, too: the F-82 was the longest-ranged piston engined fighter ever built, capable of flying nonstop from Washington DC to Alaska.

At the beginning of the Korean War, a few squadrons of F-82s were stationed in Japan as nightfighters, and that's where this particular Twin Mustang comes from. F-82s from the 68th Fighter (All-Weather) Squadron scored the first US aerial kills of the Korean War. Stationed at Itazuke AB, Japan, they continued to fly F-82s until the type was retired for the jet-powered F-94 Starfire.

This bird is somewhat fictional: the markings are accurate for the 68th F(AW)S, but the name is my own invention: Tetsuko translates to "Lady of Steel" in Japanese. It lacks the central radar "pickle"--I had that left off because it was ugly!

This is yet another of my dad's work; he likes to build models for me. This particular model was built off of the 1/48 Monogram kit, which is relatively rare today.
