From what's been seen so far, Twilight goes back in time to witness how Luna became Nightmare Moon, but WILL Nightmare Moon return? Don't know. Just have to wait until Nov. 23.

She does not time travel, it`s a vision, or illusion. She isn`t really there, but sees what`s happening

Someone also said that that scene was just an illusion Twilight has. But we won't know for sure until the new season comes out. But having it take place in the past is a possibility.
