I like this image. The blended style you use the create texture and form is beautiful and the face paint (tattoo?) is cool and looks in perspective (though the mark on his right cheek could stand a bit more shading). What especially drew me to this image is the intensity of his expression. Love the hair, both texture-wise and the frame it creates.
That being said, I don't think I come away from this image with the feeling you want me to. I'm thinking, "Cool. He's likes hiding in the dark, but isn't taken over by it. Probably a reluctant good guy."
If you want me to think he's evil in the darkness, it's not quite there. I think it's the overall brightness of the image. He doesn't exactly hide in the darkness, since his face stands out so clearly from the background. What I would love to see is darker shadows on the face and a melding of background and face. Giving him shadowy shoulders and a neck could do it for you. Letting the left side of his face sink into the darkness would definitely do it. Even just blending his jawline into the darkness would make him that much more unsettling.
So, this is artistically beautifully done. Theme-wise, you're almost there. Just let the darkness pull him in a bit more. I'd love to see a darker version if you post a remake.
