Description Birdtober 2022, day 21: Kakapo (Strigops habroptilus)
oil on canvas, 25x20 cm

I have loved this bird for ages (same goes for kiwi, there is just something about flightless birds of the New Zealand - I even wrote a seminar work titled "A Flightless Bird Club of Hiking Enthusiasts" where I described how kiwis search for their food utilizing weak electricity receptors on their beaks... after exhausting depictions of their evolutionary history on the islands of course). And I always wanted to paint it. However, I have been intimidated by the fine feathers - that actually don't look anything like "normal" feathers you may know from other birds - on their faces that I was like "nah, the the time is not right yet". Well, the smaller format of the canvas actually helped a lot battling this intimidation. Maybe one day I will be able to fulfill my dream of seeing them, too.
I used a bit of blue pigments to mingle among greens of their body feathers with simple brush strokes, and frankly, I love it so much that I will probably hang it on my office wall.
