The imagined scenario starts with the introduction of a disease that causes infected birds to drop their feathers. After a million years of this, a race of birds had evolved a broad, membranous wings hidden under their feathers to keep them flying even after their flight feathers fall out. After another million years, varieties of this bird take advantage of the huge size possible with this new method of flight. They've evolved a 16 foot wingspan, totally abandoning flight feathers.
