I love the hippogriff vibe, but with the snow leopardish tail.
And learned that nightjars, under the name bugeaters was really popular in Nebraska for a time.
Should be the state bird rather than the Western Meadowlark which is shared by six states: Montana, Kansas, North Dakota, Oregon, Wyoming, and Nebraska.

Thanks! Nightjars totally deserve to be state birds! They're the perfect mix of adorable and terrifying depending on if their mouth is open or not!

And their calls are decent, too.

Is there a specific nightjar species you're referring to? We have the common nighthawk in OH and their calls sound like a cricket or cicada.

Yes, I was. It's the common nighthawk, which is a nightjar, but not Caprimulgus. It's Chordeiles minor.

Ah ok, so the same nightjar species that I see! I remember finding out those noises I heard where from this bird and not an insect when I was a teenager! I used to see them all the time in high school 'cause they'd swoop over the football field lights during games to catch insects.

It took me a moment to remember, but I've used Cornell Lab Bird Academy before.

It was the main site my Ornithology professor had us use, albeit a good 7 years ago.

So you have a degree in Ornithology?
That's neat. I got mine in Ecology.

I never found one. My degree was a "Terminal" M.A. so it was effectively worthless.
You basically need a Ph.D. to get anywhere in the biological sciences. Instead I teach highly gifted kids one-on-one. I rather enjoy it, most of the time. I have the freedom to cover whatever topics that the students want as long as I cover the required curriculum, as well. Though I do go more in depth.
By the way, I don't have Teaching Certification. I'd have to go back to college, get another degree and pay for it completely out of pocket while trying to earn a living. Adding to the "I can't" is having to take care of my mother who has developed a form of dementia (not Alzheimer's) and that is taking more and more of me to do.
P.S. no family is available to help, they all live too far away, my mother alienated them, or they have their own parents to care for.

That's what I've always heard too. My friend went on to get her Master's and it was so horribly stressful for her, she warned me not to do it.
I don't regret getting my degree, as I met my best friend there, and I do use the knowledge in my art somewhat. Eventually though I realized I didn't actually want a job in that field, I was just doing it because my entire family kept pushing me towards it, insisting I'd love it. With my mental health, holding down a job at all isΒ a monumental task...Β
That sounds like a great job! Not needing to go back for a Teaching Certification has to be nice too!

Yes, though with the certification, I could get a better paying job. But with my mother's health declining I just don't know.
She had another bad day today. She was dizzy, couldn't remember eating, and had some trouble walking. Though some of that walking trouble is because I walk fast. I had to walk fast as a kid to keep up, and so I still walk that way. She doesn't anymore, unless "she" wants to. And mostly she doesn't.

It's a day-to-day thing. Some days are better than others. Some days I can cope easily, others are days I want a private sound proof padded room to scream and pound in. Or some days to justΒ bury myself in, rather like mice.

I'll remember, though right now...
My mother's scattershot memory is challenging.
