Description WIP for *one* of my ACen costume

Alright, I was asked for a step-by-step, so here's a run down (since I don't have pictures to do a tutorial, and don't intend on making another anytime soon~)

What you'll need:
*Glove (Preferably leather, but if you want a different look, its up to you)

*Hot glue/Super glue or a needle and thread that can make it through 2+ layers of leather/fake leather

*Rivets (I cut up an old belt that had some)

*Black paint

* Metallic spray paint, I used a beaten-look copper one from walmart that i had left over from a previous project (optional but convenient) You'll want something bronze, brass, copper, or an antique gold, not to bright though.

* Metallic paint (I used Venetian gold, it was in the craft paint section of Hobby Lobby, I'm sure you can find it other places)

*Optional, but I found (at Hobby Lobby) Something called "Metallic buffing wax" which you dab on your finger, then rub on an object to give it a gold-leaf finish, I used antique gold. If you can find it, get it, it's fairly cheap and really cool, but you can get the same effect with paint I'm sure

1. You'll need to get a some sort of glove for the base. I chose leather because, A. I needed a leather glove for my other hand, and B. I figured it would hold the paint better, but if you want to experiment, go for it! (It's how I made this whole thing)

2. Once you get your glove (Mine was about $10 from walmart, but you might find them for cheaper other places) (you can skip this if you want a different look) I chopped off the fingers, and the part that covers the wrist

(you can skip the above if you want a different look)

3. I cut out the finger panels (or joints if you want). What i did was cut out shapes of scrap leather (You can probably use any sort of fake leather as well, or even craft foam, but i'd experiment with the paint on it first). The shapes were a sort of..fat/flattened T like this...

(Go here for how the shape looks
[link] Sorry for the size)

you'll need 2 for each finger, and one for your thumb (Cut some tests first to make sure they fit correctly)

3. You'll also need to cut at least three panels for the back of your hand
_______
( ________) <---like that but bigger x3 (more or less depending on the look you want)

4. Now comes the annoying time consuming part. Take your fat T shapes and wrap the cross at the top of the T around your finger, with the "leg" of the T point toward your hand (Do the one that will fit closest to your hand, it's just easier)
I just hot glued mine, because I can't sew through leather with my sewing machine, and didn't have a needle that would go through leather to hand sew, but if you do, I'd advise to, just to be safe.

Do that on each finger

5.The second row of T's. Same as the first, just lower. The leg should over lap the joint of your finger and the cross of the first T so they surround your finger joint, but don't hinder it (think plate armor gauntlets, or scale-mail)

6. Attach the three panels to the back of your hand, with whatever you can use to attach them so that they are right next to each other (mine overlap a little, but they don't have to)

7. If you got spray paint then stick something in the glove 9I used a paint stick) and grab a friend. You'll need to have someone hold the stick while you spray the glove down. Optionally, you could could just cover the glove with the regular metallic paint, but this is quicker for the initial coat. Cover all sides, including finger tips and the opening for your hand.

8. When that dries, you'll need to cover any spots that might show the material underneath with the metallic paint and a brush. My base glove turned slightly silver with the spray paint, so I ended up dry brushing the paint over the exposed base glove parts

9. When that dries again, dry brush some black over your glove. Everywhere. No one wants to see a shiny new metal hand, they want wear and tear. A back story if you will. Don't worry if you get to dark in places, you can always go over it with the metallic paint again, and vise versa. (I did about three different attempts throughout, fix and tweaking parts)

8. Finally, I used the buffing wax stuff to go back over the glove and add back in some shine and highlights. It also helped add another tone, since it was a slightly different color then others. Alternatively, use your metallic paint, or another color of metallic paint (staying in that bronze-copper family)

9. Now onto rivets. I re purposed some from an old belt, which meant that mine had there backs covered and were easy to attach, no pounding required. If you can, I'd say pound them into some scrap leather/fabric and then cut them out so they already have a backing (other wise you'd need to poudt them in before you attach the panels/finger panels to the gloves, which I didn't do, and don't know how it would work first hand)

10. I attached rivets where ever i put a panel of leather. two on each finger panels, (so 4 on every finger, 2 on the thumb) and 2 on each of the hand panels (about 24 in all i believe) I used hot glue and super glue to attach them.

11. Take pics, post on DA, and link me!

In theory, if you don't want it to be a steampunk-y copper, you could do the same with shades of chrome/silver/gunmetal and have a more modern metal hand

Still need to figure out how to hide the elastic near the end though...

It looks great, how easily do the fingers bend? If the panels are glued, doesn't that restrict the bending of your fingers?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SeraphimSeranade In reply to CaelynTek [2010-04-18 18:45:54 +0000 UTC]

Not really, the panels are only glued at one point on either side (where actual screws would be, had I not been lazy/known what I was doing haha) so the rest of it has gaps between, plus, the gloves themselves are large men's work gloves, so there's a lot of extra space.

There is some reistance, but not enough for it to hinder much ^.^

SeraphimSeranade In reply to metallicsponge [2010-03-01 23:29:04 +0000 UTC]

Well, as of right now, probably not. I'm busy with schoolwork at the moment(last half of the semester, so it's crunch time)

Plus, most of the thing is held together with superglue/hot glue (My sewing machine refuses to sew through leather) so I don't think I'd feel comfortable selling things that may fall apart on the buyer

If you want though, I can post exactly what I used to make it and how step by step, Honestly, it wasn't that hard, and this is the first "prop" I've ever made.
