Gift

One night while standing in my place
I first saw that angelic face
Amongst all others who I did see
She was the only one to notice me

Though tainted by the liquor sweet
Her words still touched when we did greet
Touched a soul which lay quiet at rest
Awakening him within his breast

Instantaneous it was for her kindness to show
But he held back to take it slow
To make sure she would have no regret
Of words said false, or time they spent

But nevertheless, her impact was felt
And had started to make his shy shield melt
A small step forward, towards becoming free
To show his emotions, & who he was meant to be

And so from that night in 2004
He would try to look out for her forever more
In what forms that it would take
He did not know, just that his caring would not break

But then she did vanish for many months long
Over the summer, remembered only in song
And when the summer was over she did reappear
But he could not gain courage to ask of the night from last year

Then finally came an opportunity to take
To try and give back some of what she helped make
To try and capture some of that sweet & kind touch
That she had already given him so much

A birthday poem, written one morn
As a tribute back from a new life reborn
And when received it seemed to bring joy
And thus in turn did it bring to the boy

So now he sits writing a poem once more
Trying to make sense of the feelings he bore
Trying to figure out just how to say
“Whenever I see you, it brightens my day”

But now a year has passed
Some things change, some remain the same
But he cannot forget the point from where he came
Something that probably was never meant to be, but no one’s to blame
But always will he treasure the girl with a gift for a name

Thanks for the compliments

Not much thinking involved in my poems, you can see by some that I've put times next too how long it took from start to finish . I think if I thought about them too much, they wouldn't be as raw and honest. Metaphors are analogies tend to come to me fairly easily too (although some people give me weird looks for some of them).

As for continuing to ask someone out when they've said no, it's always been a bit of a dilemma for me. You can continue to push to show how serious you are about them (but at the risk of pushing them away) or you can show respect for their decision and then leave the ball in their court to respond if they change their mind (at the risk of them moving on or thinking you aren't interested anymore). I've tended to do the later to try and at least keep their friendships (I guess settling for something less but at least that they seem willing to give) but seems like it means I'm never in the running for the main prize...

Anyway at least your story gives me some hope .

Well thought out- my fiance actually asked me out six times before I said yes-
he was my best mate and I didn't want to ruin the friendship- he glared at ev one of my bf's LOL.

I rather liked this poem "shy shield" sounds great (:
