Description I had to do 13 hours of studying today because this guy wouldn't let me concentrate half the morning asking me about what I thought about the cars he kept finding (he's looking to buy a new one).

I honestly think Jose and I get on each other's nerves often because we're very much alike... though we're the ones that butt-heads the most, we're also the ones who understand each other best (though we're both incredibly stubborn and refuse to understand each other often).

---

Just in case you didn't get it
"You're too young to be going through a mid-life crisis" was because he was looking at a convertible sport car.

"Das Auto" which = Volkswagen, he agreed that it would be a hassle having to take it to the dealership since a mechanic needs special tools to do any VW repairs.

and
"Konichiwa" though we looked at a lot of Japanese cars, the main issue was that the ones he seemed to like were cars that were rare around here and he might have trouble with ordering parts.

I want a blue Chevy Malibu. It's not happening anytime soon.

Your brother should buy a Volt, though. (Like anyone can afford it)

Keep in mind I had a Mitsubishi Eclipse and on top of being reliable and safe it was made in the states, easy to work on, and parts were easy to come by.

VWs well kind of depend on where you live. If it's the NW or the NE then there are usually a lot of mechanics for it but I wouldn't recommend it if you live in the midwest since I didn't see a ton non-dealership mechnics who could work on them when I lived there.

The one that's too dirty you can get a car fax report on, take to a mechanic, and whatever else to get it checked out before making a decision. I never wash my car but it's well maintained and clean on the inside. It just seems kind of pointless to wash it when it's not like I drive it around in the mud offroading or anything like that. In KS it seemed pointless because with the dust there it was dusty in a day.

oh yeah that's one thing he decided he would not be buying american.
I loved my little ford escort, it served me well for many years, but I can understand why he wouldn't want one.

hit and miss on all of those I live on the west coast, So.Cal... I told him mexico might have the right mechanics, but with the recent news about mechanics and drug related problems lately I don't think anyone's going to be going to mexico for repairs anymore (even though it's so much cheaper).

well that may be true there, but here I think my assessment is more accurate... if they don't take care of the outside the inside isn't going to be getting any attention either.

If he wants something other than american I'd suggest he look at the Mitsubishi Eclipse. Ours was pretty cheap despite being an 03 (11k from a dealer) had pretty cheap insurance. They are extremely safe... uh I kind of rolled mine due to following a drunk friend home on a dirt road... I was beyond tired and extremely inexperienced (no experience on dirt roads at all) but I thought I'd do the right thing and make sure she made it home safely but she wouldn't slow down and the dirt road had recently been turned (like go over it and till it up) so there were soft patches of sand (that I didn't even know about) and I hit one and flipped my car. I walked away with a couple scratches/bruises and a sprained ankle (I have weak ankles). Biggest mistake of my life was thinking I should follow her home. Boss or not she wouldn't let me drive her and trying to keep up with her was just stupid, especially when I was tired. BUT the car proved to be extremely safe. It's not meant for off roading though so if he does any of that he shouldn't get it. It's great for GPM I averaged between 27 and 32 depending on whether I was on the Highway or in town. Plus it had a serious fucking sound system, hugged curves like a dream (I said my car was a lesbian because she was a girl and she loved curves - like me ^.^ I'm bi but when it comes to girls I like curves) The seats (sports trim not leather) were FANTASTIC when it came to keeping them clean and were seriously comfortable in the extreme heat of summer and the extreme cold of winter. Plus it has a back seat which most sports cars don't... though it's small. The hatchback/trunk space was huge but easy to get in to and I changed a tire all by myself on her for the first time and OMFG it was so easy! She was also a fucking fantastic little car to actually drive. Good visablity, speed(not that I would ever speed -.- on those KS straight aways...), killer sound system even with the sunroof open, and just fucking SEXY. Oh and they can be modded pretty easily though he should stay way from the doofy ass spoilers I've seen retards put on them.

Yeah I dunno... I probably would if they were reliable in their skills. That said my best friend's dad and a friend of a coworker did most of my repairs when I was in KS, when we were in ME it was my husband's dad's mechanic that he'd been using for decades and here well we don't even drive our car so don't have one yet.

It depends on what the outside looks like. If it's dusty kind of dirty and you live someplace that's dusty that's just how stuff works. In Maine (midcoast) there was a problem with rust because of the salt water just like killing the paint. It didn't mean the car didn't run great but the paint was often shit. You weren't allowed more than a certain amount of rust to pass an inspection (which was required every year). The clear coat coming off and such was one thing, but if there's actual rust that's like going to harm the body of the car then that's another. I had a volvo there (which btw awesome cars, better than VWs IMO). The thing I would suggest is to LOOK at it, check out the inside. IF the inside isn't immaculant then they probably don't give a shit about their car. The exception being farmers (who's cars are always dirty, inside and out, but always reliable and in good condition mechanically). They rely on their cars running but have a job that left them coming home filthy so they tended to get the inside and outside dirty. The average person though is going to care about the inside of the car being kept clean if they maintain their car properly. I'm sure there are other exceptions but as a rule of thumb it's the inside not the outside that is more important if it's clean.

wow, long comment is long...

well he is looking into Japanese cars, but not the Mitsubishi, he's more looking towards the Honda and Hyundai, we've had experiences with those and they've always been good car. the toyota's (despite the recent problems it's had) are, according to him and his mechanically inclined friends, the best of the japanese cars so he's looking into those too.

I agree the inside is more important than the outside, but like I said in this particular city, where we have no dust, or farmers, we're a suburb/city/beach town, the outside of a car gives a glimpse into how well a person treats their car.

KiterieAine In reply to SerenEvy [2011-07-17 17:34:48 +0000 UTC]

hehe yeah...

I like Toyota's and Honda's. My best friend has a Honda and has had like half a dozen or so. She had one in HS, her parents had one (both were used and reliable) then they traded those in for new ones when she started college then when she graduated and got married her hubby had one too and I think even their SUV is a honda. And I agree despite Toyota's recent issues they're still a reliable company. It's not like they have a history of being unreliable. Mitsus are reliable and more sporty generally. It kind of depends on what he's looking for. If he wants a regular car or a sports car. I'm a sports car kind of girl myself so Mitsu wins since I like their style of sports cars in relation to cost more than the others. They look very anime-ish. ^.^ The others had a couple of nice ones but were more expensive for the ones I liked.

*nods* That's kind of what I meant. It depends on where you are whether or not it's a big deal. The other thing is... if they're selling the car uh why not wash it before taking the picture? Screams lazy.

I personally have always liked the Mitsubishi spider eclipse, but for my brother I think he thinks it's too girly looking. Mind you, he's going from a muscle car, and he's a very VERY Mexican, manly-man looking dude (no brawny man, but still), so that's pretty much what he had me looking at yesterday, asking me if he thought that he would look good in that particular car. He wants a small car for gas milage, but still wants something that suits him.

exactly! that's the point I was making with my bro yesterday. Presumably when one lists a car, you try to sell it at it's best. If it's best is a dirty mess, I don't even want to waste my time looking at the inside, I'll just move on to the next car.

KiterieAine In reply to SerenEvy [2011-07-17 22:14:43 +0000 UTC]

Mmm I'd go for a guy with a spider eclipse in a heartbeat but yeah the mexicans I knew always commented on how little it was. The town I grew up in and was living in before we moved to seattle was like 75% hispanic. So I can totally see him thinking that. Honestly the ones who have ridden in it were impressed because of the speed and the sound system but most never get that far.

*nods* And if you don't find anything then you can always go and give those a look after you've gone through all of the rest.

so apparently VWs need to be taken to dealerships for repairs because they need special tools... in the end the best recommendations he got from friends who work at dealerships and mechanics was to go for a Japanese car (preferably common ones like Camery, Civic, and other commonly bought cars)

thanks! have fun fishing... now I'm off to bed!
