Description "My Body Scan, #1", 1 March 2000.
my body & my scanner

this is one of several times i scanned myself. i only scanned my entire body in scanner-sized sections, twice. this is the first full-body scan i did. the actual scans are life-sized at 100dpi, 8.5" x 11.7" (the size of the scanner glass).

i took off the cover of my scanner, put the scanner on the floor and laid across the scanner, being careful to try to match up which "piece" of my body i had left off at, so they would fit together in the end. i arranged the pieces in photoshop for the layout shown here. i also printed out each section on photo paper (although that was a little smaller than life-size because the paper was smaller than the scanner glass), and then i arranged the print outs to make the whole body. with it laying on the floor, it looked like i was floating up through water under a glass floor. really weird. it was fun to do, but it took several hours to complete the scans & it was pretty tiring.

i'll be putting some of the "pieces" up in my Scraps section at full-size. check 'em out!

This is an awesome idea! Very nicely done too, and there isn't any distortion between the individual tiles!

That's really a cool idea!

you should definitely try to scan in a background, you know
scan out a whole image this way, with the weird blockyness going on.

hmm.. i don't know what the background could be that i could scan, since above me is only the ceiling i tried doing some scans with my new scanner and it's not as good as the old one i had. for some reason it has an extremely shallow depth of field... anything not directly on the glass quickly falls out of focus, so that would be even worse for putting in a background.

you got me thinking though... i should do another full body scan... i think i'm due

I just though hmm, could you do a whole room or background this way, it would turn out more like a collage.
you could scan in sheets of fabric the same way as you did your body, taking chunks at a time, until you have the shape of hills you want in the background, or something like that, fake plants sound interesting...
you get me?

ah yes, i see what you mean it would be cool to hold up the scanner to the walls and scan the room that way even, but that would get pretty tiring! it was really hard to do the full-body scans because i had to almost levitate over the scanner so not to put my full weight on it and risk cracking the glass.
