Ubuntu is an OS (operating system) like Windows but much better (almost in every way)
It's open source that means that it's free to download and free support and free apps.
I use it now in dual-boot with Windows and i like it.

Well not new version every year, but a new on every six months for a normal release, Sergbel might be using a LTS(Long Term Support) which isn't a new release for a whole year(Mostly two year).
Well Linux has been out since 1991, but was a computer that was "Restarted" from the old Unix computers, which "is" way Older than Mac and Microsoft.
So in other words Linux in ways has been out since your grandparents where in high school.
