Oh. Well, it's quite simple -- it's the Vortex at the end, sucking in Rust's soul or Rust emmiting the Vortex -- we never know if there was anything supernatural in the story or was it just Rust's imagination, his narcotic flashbacks and spontaneous hallucinations. I guess, the sourse of the Vortex was Rust's mind -- hence the image.
