Much more regrettable is the abandonment of My Peoples. Solomon's description of the proposed feature indicates what might have been a wholly original and visually stunning film:
"The idea for My Peoples grew out of Barry Cook's interest in American folk art. The co-director of Mulan, Cook imagined a tale of star-crossed lovers set in Appalachia in the late 1940s. Old Man McGee swears to keep his daughter Rose away from Elgin Harper because of an old feud and the superstition that 'bad things happen' when Harpers and McGees get together. The 'Peoples,' folk-art characters Elgin crafts from found objects, come to life to bring the young lovers together."
The interesting twist to the film's design was that the Peoples would have been rendered in CG in contrast to the film's overall presentation in traditional animation. The artwork revealed in the book foreshadowed what could have been an amazing and visually arresting final film. A careful reading between the lines indicates that executive-level interference ultimately doomed the project, but Solomon does note that "Some artists still hope that My Peoples will be revived one day."

This sounds like it would've been such a cute movie! A departure from the usual fairytales they do.

Yeah absolutely! I really wish they'll bring this project back, like they did for Snow Queen! But keeping it in 2D ! Like the story's happening during the 40-50s, the movie would look like "Iron Giant" which is a great movie ^^

it looks like a bunch of reasons, but mainly:
There were lots of changes with who was in charge of Disney, and then the animation studio shut down for a bit (although they did agree to finish Brother Bear and My Peoples after the shut down)
They were afraid Bluegrass wouldn't sell.
It's a pretty sad story of how this never took off, but interesting to see how big corporations run and treat each other.
I really like this quote. I hope it is something I never have to face, but I fear I'll have to:
"Which was tough. I mean, it's a hard lesson to learn that -- while you may personally be loyal to a corporation - it's impossible for a corporation to then be loyal back to an individual. Enormous multinational companies just aren't built like that." - Barry Cook, creator/director of "My Peoples."

Thank you! I knew about this well.. 1 or 2 years ago ^^ thanks to a french site/forum. I always wanted to draw that - at least one of the amazing charachters - and I finally did

Oh gosh I do, too. Though I doubt they will. They've been holding back Snow Queen for a while now, too, and are not really showing any intentions of releasing it any time in the near future.
Tough this seems like an awesome movie, and it really surprises me that hardly anybody has heard of it. It defiantly got my attention.

Ah yes Snow Queen... They're making the movie then they gave up, months later.. years later they took back the project and then leave it .. I saw in an interview of Andreas Deja, he said that they didn't threw the project away but they'll bring itback in the right moment. We have just to wait this "right" moment. I hope that they'll keep it doing in 2D.

This is really lovely. I'm quite curious about the film. I didn't even know it was in production, and I hope that Disney will resume work on it in the future
