According to the internets (which never lies, of course), the green sea turtle can live up to 80 years. This guy seemed smaller, so I doubt he's close to that old, but I'm not a marine biologist, so I'm hardly the most informed. What I do know is he's seen mysteries, wonders, and tragedies many times over beyond what I have. The titanic battles of the creatures of the deep, the explosion of life that can only be found in the ocean, and the slow dying of that same life as humanity struggles to find its balance in this world. I followed him for am hour in the waves, watching him choose what I assume are the best nibbles of weeds growing off the ocean floor and crippled coral reefs. He seemed to watch me the whole time, but continued unbotheted by me for all of it. Who knows what he thought of me, or if his reptile brain was even capable of recognizing me. Buy I remember him, and hope he's still out there, exploring the depths.
