It's possible on Golarion too...sort of...there's a 600-page book about such a hero in Golarion: The Green Knight.  It's the tale of Paz, a goblin who comes down with the flu and becomes convinced that he's dying.  He decides to cheat his way into an easy afterlife by performing good deeds until he dies.  He fails to notice his own recovery, and fearing his doom, his deeds become more and more extravagant as he encounters and rubs shoulders with famous Taldan political and religious figures.  Over the course of his adventures, he comes to realize he IS a good person, and soon becomes a paladin for real.  He meets his end slaying a dragon, which earns him the place in Heaven he'd always wanted.  The book, despite being controversial for its convoluted and unclear political message (which you need a strong understanding of Taldan history and politics to even get, anyway), is mostly remembered for its ending, and the message that heroism can come from anywhere, and that even a goblin can become a paladin!

(Paz, incidentally, was the player character of Pathfinder developer Crystal Fraiser!)

It was a lot of fun to DM for the character. He was made for a one night module, but I'm pretty sure we'll see him again.
